What this role is
Entry-level technician who performs routine inspection, maintenance, and repair tasks on plant engine room and nuclear plant equipment under direct supervision. At the Entry-Level Professional (P1) level, the role owns own tasks within a defined component, routine problems with known solutions, and drives own deliverables. None — building the craft.
What this level does
- Perform routine preventive equipment monitoring, lubrication, and service on assigned machines under close supervision, observing all safety precautions to keep line downtime to a minimum
- Troubleshoot and repair straightforward mechanical and pneumatic failures on specific equipment as quickly and accurately as possible, following OEM standards and detailed work instructions
- Record service logs, lubrication reports, and maintenance records, entering work order recordkeeping and inventory withdrawals into the CMMS (e.g., Ellipse)
- Serve as an on-call responder for breakdowns on a bounded set of machines, escalating anything beyond standard procedures to the shift supervisor
- Communicate accidents, threats, downtime events, and cost-saving observations to the shift supervisor
- Knowledge applied
- Applies basic mechanical and pneumatic knowledge and OEM standards to routine service and repair on specific machines, following detailed instruction.
- Complexity & problem solving
- Solves routine, well-defined equipment problems with standard answers; escalates anything unfamiliar.
- Collaboration & interaction
- Stable working relationships with shift supervisor and immediate crew; reports events upward.
- Typical experience
- 0–1 years; trade entry, apprenticeship, or new technician.
Skills at this level
- Reliability/Maintenance Methodologies
- — Applies maintenance systems used by high-performing plants — Root Cause Analysis, Reliability-Centered Maintenance, and TPM — to eliminate recurring failures, maximize plant capacity, and minimize cost.
- Interpreting Technical Schematics
- — Reads and interprets equipment schematics and drawings alongside diagnostic tool output to locate and diagnose mechanical and electrical faults in plant and mining equipment.
- Multi-Craft Maintenance
- — Performs work spanning two or more crafts — pipe fitting, HVAC maintenance, insulating, welding, machining, carpentry, and electrical/mechanical repair — including installing, aligning, and balancing new equipment.
- Mechanical and Pneumatic Systems
- — Maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs the mechanical and pneumatic systems that drive plant equipment, restoring them to OEM operating standards.
- Preventive and Predictive Maintenance
- — Plans and performs routine equipment monitoring, lubrication, and service, and schedules inspections and overhauls per process standards to ensure reliability and uptime.
- CMMS Recordkeeping
- — Uses a Computerized Maintenance Management System (e.g., Ellipse) to record work orders, log service and lubrication history, withdraw inventory, and analyze failure and downtime data for reliability decisions.
- Breakdown Response and Troubleshooting
- — Responds to production-loss breakdowns, troubleshooting and repairing failures quickly and accurately while observing safety precautions to keep line downtime minimal and prevent recurrence.
- Boiler and HRSG Fleet Reliability
- — Coordinates repairs, combustion tuning, and performance across fleet-wide equipment such as coal- and gas-fired boilers, Heat Recovery Steam Generators, and balance-of-plant systems.
- Spare Parts and Maintenance Standardization
- — Standardizes maintenance procedures and spare-parts strategies across equipment classes to make reliability outcomes repeatable and cost-effective across the site or fleet.
- Maintenance Project Leadership
- — Leads and coordinates multiple engineering maintenance projects, developing and improving techniques and procedures and serving as prime technical contact for contracts and vendors.
- Safety Focus
- — Observes and enforces all safety protocols during troubleshooting, repair, and equipment installation, treating safe work practice as a precondition of every maintenance task.
