What this role is

An individual contributor who performs routine maintenance and troubleshooting on engine room and nuclear plant equipment under general guidance. At the Developing Professional (P2) level, the role owns defined deliverables / small features, applies established patterns, and drives own and immediate-team deliverables. May guide interns.

What this level does

  • Provide mechanical maintenance coverage across a defined area of the plant, responding to production-loss breakdown repairs and executing repairs alongside operations with limited routine independence
  • Interpret technical schematics and diagnostic readings to diagnose recurring equipment failures and select the appropriate repair method within familiar contexts
  • Perform preventive maintenance planning as indicated by process standards, scheduling inspections and minor overhauls in coordination with operating activities
  • Apply multi-craft skills (pipe fitting, welding, machining, HVAC, electrical/mechanical repair) to install, align, and balance new equipment to specification
  • Mentor P1 technicians on diagnostic technique, safe work practice, and correct CMMS work-order closeout
Knowledge applied
Applies multi-craft skills and schematic interpretation to conventional maintenance tasks across a defined plant area.
Complexity & problem solving
Exercises judgment on moderately complex, recurring failures within familiar equipment contexts.
Collaboration & interaction
Builds productive relationships with operations; may mentor P1 technicians.
Typical experience
2+ years hands-on maintenance, or completed technical program.

Skills at this level

Reliability/Maintenance Methodologies
Applies maintenance systems used by high-performing plants — Root Cause Analysis, Reliability-Centered Maintenance, and TPM — to eliminate recurring failures, maximize plant capacity, and minimize cost.
Interpreting Technical Schematics
Reads and interprets equipment schematics and drawings alongside diagnostic tool output to locate and diagnose mechanical and electrical faults in plant and mining equipment.
Multi-Craft Maintenance
Performs work spanning two or more crafts — pipe fitting, HVAC maintenance, insulating, welding, machining, carpentry, and electrical/mechanical repair — including installing, aligning, and balancing new equipment.
Mechanical and Pneumatic Systems
Maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs the mechanical and pneumatic systems that drive plant equipment, restoring them to OEM operating standards.
Preventive and Predictive Maintenance
Plans and performs routine equipment monitoring, lubrication, and service, and schedules inspections and overhauls per process standards to ensure reliability and uptime.
CMMS Recordkeeping
Uses a Computerized Maintenance Management System (e.g., Ellipse) to record work orders, log service and lubrication history, withdraw inventory, and analyze failure and downtime data for reliability decisions.
Breakdown Response and Troubleshooting
Responds to production-loss breakdowns, troubleshooting and repairing failures quickly and accurately while observing safety precautions to keep line downtime minimal and prevent recurrence.
Boiler and HRSG Fleet Reliability
Coordinates repairs, combustion tuning, and performance across fleet-wide equipment such as coal- and gas-fired boilers, Heat Recovery Steam Generators, and balance-of-plant systems.
Spare Parts and Maintenance Standardization
Standardizes maintenance procedures and spare-parts strategies across equipment classes to make reliability outcomes repeatable and cost-effective across the site or fleet.
Maintenance Project Leadership
Leads and coordinates multiple engineering maintenance projects, developing and improving techniques and procedures and serving as prime technical contact for contracts and vendors.
Safety Focus
Observes and enforces all safety protocols during troubleshooting, repair, and equipment installation, treating safe work practice as a precondition of every maintenance task.
