What this role is

Entry-level professional who supports surveying and spatial-data activities for oil and gas land and project planning. At the Entry-Level Professional (P1) level, the role owns own tasks within a defined component, routine problems with known solutions, and drives own deliverables. None — building the craft.

What this level does

  • Run survey instruments in the field and process the resulting survey data under direct supervision, following defined procedures
  • Produce plans and legal/engineering survey products to specification using computer-aided design (CAD) techniques and GIS tools
  • Collect and process geospatial data on assigned tasks, checking output against provided templates and tolerances
  • Perform routine data entry and organization of spatial and attribute records, escalating anomalies to senior staff
Knowledge applied
Applies foundational surveying, CAD, and GIS techniques to routine tasks following detailed instruction; learns instrument operation and standard data-processing workflows.
Complexity & problem solving
Handles routine problems with standard answers; escalates anything outside documented procedure.
Collaboration & interaction
Works within a stable internal team, taking direction from senior technicians and supervisors.
Typical experience
0–1 years; new graduate, diploma, or intern in geomatics/surveying/geospatial technology.

Spatial Data QA/QC
Performs quality assurance and quality control of spatial data against industry standards and documented procedures to ensure accuracy and compliance.
Geospatial Project Management
Manages geomatics projects across procurement, acquisition, production, and QA/QC, coordinating field and office work and portions of a budget.
Geospatial Data Standards & Regulatory Compliance
Ensures data collection and analysis comply with industry standards and regulations, and defines data management standards for datasets and products.
Applied Spatial Analysis & Modelling
Applies analytical and modelling methods to interpret geospatial data, reconcile multi-sensor datasets, and advise on data application and interpretation.
Technical Reporting & Stakeholder Consultation
Prepares client-ready reports and presentations of spatial analyses and consults interdisciplinary stakeholders and clients to gather feedback and resolve issues.
GIS User Support & Training
Provides technical support and training to technical and non-technical users on the operation and application of geographic information systems.
