What this role is
Executive who leads the geomatics function, setting strategy and standards for surveying, mapping, and spatial-data services across the organization's oil and gas projects. At the Director (Executive) (E1) level, the role owns a significant function with strategic authority, strategic and cross-functional, and drives function-wide enterprise impact. Executive leadership of a function.
What this level does
- Leads the complete geomatics function through Directors and survey/GIS managers, owning field-to-finish workflows, QA/QC of spatial data integrity, and delivery of high-precision surveys and reality-capture solutions across the organization's project portfolio
- Sets the functional strategy for geospatial technology — GIS platforms (ArcGIS, QGIS, ERDAS Imagine), acquisition methods (GNSS, satellite imagery, LiDAR, multibeam/side-scan sonar), and data-management systems (office, cloud, archive) — with detailed knowledge of the company's project and data landscape
- Establishes standards for map projections, coordinate systems, and control networks used in boundary retracement, engineering design, construction verification, as-built documentation, and digital-twin workflows
- Interfaces with peer executives and major customers as the senior geospatial authority, translating customer requirements and business goals into geospatial business solutions
- Owns functional consequences: errors in spatial data integrity or survey precision carry serious business and project-liability impact, so accountability for QA/QC and end-to-end data transfer rests at this level
- Knowledge applied
- Applies deep functional geomatics expertise — GIS platforms, survey and acquisition methods, coordinate systems, and data-integrity practice — combined with detailed knowledge of the company's projects to set functional strategy.
- Complexity & problem solving
- Solves functional-strategy problems: how to standardize field-to-finish workflows, guarantee spatial-data integrity at scale, and select geospatial technology; errors carry serious functional and project consequences.
- Collaboration & interaction
- Interfaces with other executives and major customers as the senior geospatial authority, translating customer requirements into geospatial solutions.
- Typical experience
- 12–15+ years across survey/GIS delivery and management, having led crews, projects, and directors through complex field-to-finish and digital-twin work.
Skills at this level
- Geospatial Function Strategy
- — Sets and governs the organization's strategy for GIS platforms, spatial-data acquisition, and survey delivery, deciding how geospatial capability is standardized and scaled across projects and business lines.
- Spatial Data Integrity Governance
- — Establishes and holds accountability for QA/QC standards that keep geospatial databases across office, cloud, and archive systems accurate and reflective of real-time project status, treating data-integrity failure as an enterprise risk.
- Reality Capture & Digital Twin Leadership
- — Directs high-precision survey and reality-capture programs — terrestrial and SLAM-based mobile scanning, LiDAR, and dimensional control — that feed engineering design, construction verification, as-built documentation, and digital-twin workflows.
- Customer Requirement Translation
- — Evaluates and translates customer requirements, business goals, and strategies into geospatial business solutions, acting as the senior trusted adviser between clients and the geomatics function.
- Geospatial Platform Evolution
- — Broadens the reach of GIS technology across the organization and shapes the evolution of the geospatial platform so it serves expanding business needs.
- Survey Field Operations Oversight
- — Governs conventional and advanced field operations — GNSS, bathymetry, multibeam/side-scan sonar, sub-bottom profiler, and control-network capture — on moderate-to-large complex infrastructure and industrial projects.
- Geospatial Analytics for Decision-Making
- — Directs the use of buffer-overlay and pattern analysis on spatial datasets to inform urban planning, environmental impact assessment, and transportation optimization outcomes.
- Executive Stakeholder & Board Engagement
- — Engages boards, CEOs, and industry leaders to position geospatial and reality-capture capability as corporate advantage, and represents the organization externally on geospatial strategy.
