What this role is

Leads a team of geoscience technologists in collecting and processing earth-science field and lab measurements. At the Manager (Team Lead) (M1) level, the role owns a single team, day-to-day delivery and people issues, and drives team output and health. Direct people management of one team.

What this level does

  • Supervise a unit of geoscience technicians performing day-to-day field and laboratory equipment operation, ensuring on-the-job training brings junior staff to competency under experienced supervision
  • Assign and check routine wireline and seismic interpretation tasks so deliverables meet time and quality standards within established practices
  • Review technicians' oral and written reports of methods and findings before they go to scientists, engineers, and other technicians
  • Track equipment readiness, sample handling, and site-preparation activities for the unit, escalating deviations to the next-level manager
Knowledge applied
Functional expert in geoscience data acquisition and interpretation with some leadership exposure; applies established field/lab and interpretation practices to a single unit.
Complexity & problem solving
Limited scope; resolves routine data-quality and scheduling issues using established practices and standard interpretation methods.
Collaboration & interaction
Daily interactions with technician staff and geoscience peers; relays methods and findings to scientists and engineers.
Typical experience
Seasoned technician/technologist (associate's degree or postsecondary applied-science training plus on-the-job experience) taking first-line supervisory responsibility.

Skills at this level

Wireline and seismic interpretation
Directs delivery of high-quality geoscience interpretations of wireline and seismic data to time and standard, and sets the review bar for teams producing them.
Geoscience workflow automation
Guides use of coding and analytical languages such as Python, SQL, and PostgreSQL to build and automate repeatable geoscience workflows and reduce manual interpretation effort.
Digital twin contribution
Oversees interpretative geoscience contributions toward the digital twin, integrating well, outcrop, and seismic data into a shared subsurface model.
Geoscience project leadership
Leads geoscience projects from conception through execution, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and compliance with regulatory standards.
Peer review governance
Establishes and runs the in-house peer-review process for integrated and seismic-focused studies to safeguard interpretation quality across teams.
Data and database management
Applies data-analytical skills and database knowledge to structure, quality-control, and serve subsurface data supporting interpretation and automation.
Field and laboratory equipment operation
Supervises competent operation of field and laboratory instruments, ensuring technicians reach competency through structured on-the-job training.
Cloud-native subsurface software strategy
Sets adoption and tooling strategy for cloud-native geoscience and subsurface software, including seat allocation and capability roadmaps.
Technical communication
Ensures accurate oral and written reporting of methods and findings to scientists, engineers, managers, and other technicians.
Team development and mentoring
Coaches, trains, and mentors geoscience technicians and technologists, building interpretation and automation competency across the team.
Budget and resource management
Owns unit-to-organization geoscience budgets covering consumables, contractor hours, software seats, and staffing against delivery demand.
Critical thinking in interpretation
Applies judgment when interpreting scientific data and determining relevance, and coaches teams to propose alternative solutions during site evaluation and preparation.
