What this role is

An individual contributor who supports store operations initiatives and analysis for the company's retail network. At the Developing Professional (P2) level, the role owns defined deliverables / small features, applies established patterns, and drives own and immediate-team deliverables. May guide interns.

What this level does

  • Handles the flow of merchandise from suppliers to the floor — loading and unloading trucks, moving material from the receiving area throughout the store, and may operate forklifts (e.g., Freight, Receiving, RTV, Lot roles).
  • Adheres to and enforces store policies, safety regulations, and security protocols, including proper cash handling, protecting customer information, and preventing theft.
  • Supports day-to-day operations of a busy retail location and independently performs learned opening and closing procedures.
  • Helps onboard and train new associates on store policies, stocking procedures, and equipment operation.
  • Resolves familiar customer and stock issues on the sales floor using defined procedures, referring only exceptions upward.
Knowledge applied
Applies defined operational procedures — freight handling, cash-handling, safety and loss-prevention protocols, open/close routines — with growing familiarity.
Complexity & problem solving
Exercises judgment in familiar situations, resolving common floor and stock issues independently while referring exceptions upward.
Collaboration & interaction
Builds productive working relationships within the store team; may train and mentor new associates on procedures and equipment.
Typical experience
2+ years of retail floor or receiving experience.

Skills at this level

Product knowledge
Maintains a working understanding of the products sold in the store in order to give customers accurate information, make recommendations, and answer questions on the floor.
Customer service and communication
Stays friendly, approachable, and patient with customers, and communicates clearly to assist them with inquiries, locate products, and resolve service concerns.
Merchandise and inventory handling
Places merchandise on floor and shelves, takes inventory counts, and manages the flow of goods from receiving through to a well-stocked, orderly selling floor.
Freight and receiving operations
Loads and unloads trucks, moves material from the receiving area throughout the store, and operates equipment such as forklifts to keep the store stocked and ready for business.
Loss prevention and store security
Follows and enforces cash-handling, customer-information, and anti-theft protocols alongside safety regulations to protect store assets and reduce shrink.
Opening and closing procedures
Executes the standard routines for opening and closing a retail location, ensuring the store is prepared for and secured after each trading day.
Associate onboarding and training
Onboards and trains new employees on store policies, procedures, and equipment operation so they can work to store standards.
Talent development
Builds strong retail teams by coaching associates and supervisors and readying them for expanded responsibility — a criterion for advancement in store operations itself.
Profit-and-loss management
Takes hands-on responsibility for a store's operations, labor budget, expense, and profit-and-loss results, controlling shrink and cost against targets.
Multi-store operational consistency
Oversees performance across multiple locations within a region or brand, driving consistent execution of standards and developing strategies to hit regional goals.
Business strategy and organizational leadership
Develops retail operating strategy and leads the organization, blending operational excellence with strategic thinking to optimize processes across regions or a division.
Point-of-sale (POS) operation
Uses point-of-sale systems to process customer transactions accurately and, at senior levels, to capture the sales and inventory data that inform operational decisions.
Retail performance analysis
Analyzes store and division operational data — shrink, in-stock rate, service times, sales — to identify performance gaps and drive process optimization and corrective plans.
