What this role is

An individual contributor who assembles, tests, and installs battery systems at renewable energy facilities while building proficiency in biomass material research support. At the Support Specialist (S2) level, the role owns a defined queue or customer set, standard issues within known procedures, and drives customer satisfaction for own queue. None.

What this level does

  • Operates and monitors the plant through the Distributed Control System (DCS) across multiple process units, carrying out multi-step startup, shutdown and mode-change sequences per procedure
  • Recognizes when a reading is drifting toward an alarm limit and makes routine adjustments to bring it back into range, escalating deviations that fall outside the procedure
  • Assists with troubleshooting and supports team members across plant processes during routine and maintenance operations
  • Conducts scheduled facility and equipment inspections, documenting findings and following up on standard corrective steps
Knowledge applied
Broad knowledge of DCS operation and multi-step startup/shutdown sequences across several process units.
Complexity & problem solving
Carries out semi-routine, multi-step tasks; recognizes when a reading is drifting and makes routine adjustments, escalating true deviations.
Collaboration & interaction
Follows established procedures with instruction on new tasks; routine interaction with shift peers and maintenance.
Typical experience
1–2 years; some related plant operating experience.

Skills at this level

Control Room and DCS Proficiency
Reads and responds to control panels, computer systems and distributed control systems, tracking temperature, pressure, flow rates and power to keep the plant within safe operating limits.
Process Monitoring and Variance Reporting
Watches critical process readings throughout a shift and reports variances to the Board Operator and Lead Operator so corrective action can be taken before limits are breached.
PLC and SCADA Controls Knowledge
Understands how PLCs execute real-time control of individual devices — starting/stopping a wind turbine, adjusting blade pitch, controlling solar tracker movement — and how SCADA aggregates and directs those controllers.
Power-Generation Machinery Operation
Operates power-generation and balance-of-plant machinery during regular, maintenance and emergency repair operations.
Plant Troubleshooting
Diagnoses the likely cause of process upsets and equipment issues across plant processes and takes corrective action within established procedures.
Light Maintenance and Facility Rounds
Performs light-duty maintenance, cleaning and scheduled facility/equipment inspections essential for safe and efficient operation.
Plant Safety Administration
Inspects the facility and staff, tests generator performance, trains operators on proper safety steps, creates safety guidelines and tracks safety progress.
Operating Procedure Authorship
Originates and maintains plant operating procedures and technical instructions, and develops new operating techniques for the site's renewable assets.
Environmental and Permit Compliance
Keeps the plant within all environmental limits and permits, monitoring operation against permit conditions and maintaining the evidence behind reliability and regulatory requirements.
Focus and Attentiveness
Maintains sustained attention to gauges and dials across a full shift, minimizing distractions to keep readings balanced and safe.
IT-OT / SCADA System Upkeep
Sets up and maintains SCADA hardware and software for smooth plant operation and protects the integrity of system data as IT and Operational Technology increasingly overlap.
Shift Coordination and Working Lead
Coordinates operating and field tasks across a shift and informally guides, checks and trains less experienced operators, leading the work rather than managing people.
