What this role is
Senior executive leading the organization's battery system deployment and biomass materials research programs across all renewable energy plant sites. At the Senior Director (Executive) (E2) level, the role owns multiple functions or a major area, multi-function strategy and risk, and drives major-area outcomes. Leads function leaders.
What this level does
- Leads O&M across a multi-site renewable portfolio through subordinate plant managers and operations directors, standardizing control-room, SCADA-monitoring and maintenance practices across facilities of different technologies (solar, wind, BESS, bioenergy)
- Sets fleet-level availability, capacity-factor and safety targets and owns the consolidated O&M budget, allocating maintenance resources and subcontractor spend across sites to maximize operating returns for asset owners
- Negotiates critical operating and compliance matters with utilities, regulatory agencies and major asset-owner counterparties where reliability failures carry material consequence for the operating business
- Establishes fleet-wide standards for NERC CIP / cybersecurity, communications architecture and emerging control technology, resolving cross-site operational problems that a single plant manager cannot
- Develops the operations leadership bench (plant managers, operations coordinators) and builds the escalation and corrective-action framework spanning the portfolio
- Knowledge applied
- Applies fleet-level operations expertise across multiple technologies and sites — standardizing SCADA/control practice, maintenance regimes and cybersecurity posture — to run a multi-site portfolio rather than a single facility.
- Complexity & problem solving
- Solves cross-site, cross-technology operating problems and resource trade-offs with consequences that reach the operating business's viability (availability shortfalls, budget overruns, systemic safety exposure), not just one plant's performance.
- Collaboration & interaction
- Negotiates critical operating and compliance matters with utilities, regulators and major asset-owner counterparties; leads through subordinate plant managers and operations directors.
- Typical experience
- 15+ yrs including strategic leadership of a multi-site operating unit or function within renewables.
Skills at this level
- Control systems and monitoring technology
- — Monitors plant systems through control-room interfaces, SCADA systems and field inspections, using digital control interfaces to track generation-asset operation.
- Analytical and data interpretation
- — Interprets and analyzes data from multiple plant sources — energy usage, production rates and equipment performance — to ensure the facility operates efficiently and safely.
- Mechanical and electrical competence
- — Works directly with plant hardware, troubleshooting and repairing mechanical and electrical equipment on generation and auxiliary systems.
- Regulatory and safety compliance
- — Ensures operations meet safety and regulatory standards across sites and interfaces with local utilities and regulatory agencies on compliance matters.
- Commercial ownership of operations
- — Manages the commercial side of running assets — maximizing capacity factors and managing O&M budgets — to demonstrate operating returns for the sites under control.
- SCADA / PLC / RTU / HMI
- — Applies knowledge of SCADA controls, PLC/RTU programming and HMI configuration used at utility-scale solar and BESS sites for plant monitoring and control.
- NERC CIP / cybersecurity
- — Maintains familiarity with NERC CIP requirements, plant cybersecurity and renewable-plant communications architecture as applied to operating generation assets.
- Multi-site O&M portfolio leadership
- — Standardizes control-room, maintenance and safety practice across facilities of different technologies and owns consolidated availability, capacity-factor and O&M budget targets for a renewable fleet.
- Regulatory and utility negotiation
- — Negotiates critical operating, reliability and compliance matters with grid operators, regulatory agencies and asset-owner counterparties on behalf of the operating business.
- Operating strategy and fleet reliability planning
- — Sets long-term reliability programs, technology-refresh and cost-trajectory strategy for a regional or divisional renewable fleet, balancing reliability investment against operating cost and asset life.
