What this role is
Frontline supervisor overseeing shift operators and daily activities in a refinery processing unit. At the Manager (Team Lead) (M1) level, the role owns a single team, day-to-day delivery and people issues, and drives team output and health. Direct people management of one team.
What this level does
- Supervise a shift crew of field and console operators on a single process unit, directing unit rounds, sample collection and outside-operations checks to keep temperature, pressure, flow and level within operating parameters
- Own shift continuity for the unit via the shift log and formal handover notes covering current unit status, pending permits and critical alarms
- Authorize and verify LOTO (lockout/tagout) and permit-to-work for routine field interventions on heaters, exchangers, compressors and pumps within the unit
- Coach and sign off entry-level operators through on-site qualification steps, mentoring the field-to-console progression
- Respond to unit alarms and abnormal conditions on shift, directing operators to stabilize or safely reduce rate and escalating incidents affecting operation or safety
- Knowledge applied
- Functional expert in operating a single process unit (distillation, absorption, cracking, reforming) applying established procedures, LOTO and permit practice; applies knowledge to direct a shift crew's rounds and console/field coordination.
- Complexity & problem solving
- Limited scope; resolves routine operating deviations and alarm response using established practices, escalating incidents beyond the unit.
- Collaboration & interaction
- Daily interaction with unit operators, the console operator, and peer shift supervisors; coordinates with the onsite lab and adjacent units.
- Typical experience
- Fully qualified operator (typically 3+ years operational/process technology experience) with some leadership exposure and console/field experience.
Skills at this level

- Control Room / DCS-PLC Operation
- — Oversees console operation of plant systems through a DCS/PLC interface, coordinating with field operators to run units safely and efficiently and managing alarm response.
- Process Safety and Permit-to-Work
- — Governs LOTO (lockout/tagout), permit-to-work and management-of-change for field interventions to keep running operations compliant and safe.
- Shift Continuity and Handover
- — Owns continuity across shifts through the shift log and formal handover notes covering unit status, pending permits and critical alarms.
- Product Quality Control
- — Ensures product meets specification by directing sample collection, lab turnaround and console adjustments to hold units on-spec.
- Abnormal Situation and Incident Response
- — Directs stabilization, safe rate reduction and escalation when units alarm or upset, and reports issues, malfunctions or incidents affecting operation or safety.
- Operator Qualification and Mentoring
- — Trains and signs off operators through the field-to-console progression, running structured qualification across the unit's process operations.
- Production Reporting and Performance Tracking
- — Generates production reports and tracks performance indicators (yield, reliability, off-spec events) to guide operating decisions and improvement.
- Turnaround and Intervention Coordination
- — Plans and sequences maintenance windows, isolations, drains and returns to service with maintenance and technical functions to balance continuity against equipment risk.
- Continuous Improvement in Operations
- — Applies continuous-improvement practice to plant operations, sponsoring changes to procedures, console strategies and energy/yield performance.
- Operations Workforce Planning
- — Sets staffing models, qualification standards and succession for the shift-based operating organization across units and areas.
