What this role is

Directs all production test engineering and operations functions across one or more manufacturing sites. At the Senior Director (M5) level, the role owns multiple functions or a large department, org-level trade-offs and investment, and drives multi-function results. Leads directors and managers.

What this level does

  • Directs the production test function across the division, defining best-in-class manufacturing test practices and the multi-year roadmap to achieve them
  • Leads through department managers to standardize test architecture across module, server, rack, and cluster assembly levels
  • Influences executive and major-customer decisions on test requirements, factory integration, and capital equipment investment
  • Sponsors automation and process-simplification initiatives that reduce human error and manual intervention across product lines
Knowledge applied
Impacts division-wide operations by defining test methods and standards across the full product hierarchy and building the roadmap.
Complexity & problem solving
Solves complex org-wide test problems, standardizing architecture from module through cluster and defining capital investment methods.
Collaboration & interaction
Influences executives and major customers on test requirements and factory integration; leads through department managers.
Typical experience
10–12+ years including second-level management and test-strategy work.

Skills at this level

Test line troubleshooting and fault isolation
Assists and directs technicians in troubleshooting and repairing failed test equipment, fixtures, and electronic assemblies to keep production test flowing, using fault-isolation tools across board, module, server, rack, and cluster levels.
Manufacturing test process development
Develops manufacturing test processes for new products from engineering specifications, including PFMEA, new test equipment development, and validation of automated test programs and fixtures.
Statistical Process Control (SPC) and risk control
Applies advanced statistical and analytical methods, including SPC, to identify, quantify, and control variation and risk in high-volume, complex manufacturing test environments.
Failure review and test escape reduction
Coordinates with the manufacturing floor and Failure Review Board to review test failure data and develop methods that continually reduce and eliminate test escapes.
Test equipment selection and capital planning
Leads selection of suitable test equipment for the manufacturing test process and coordinates identification and procurement of capital test equipment with subsystem engineers and project managers.
Test automation tooling
Develops and deploys automated test programs and fixtures using tools such as NI LabVIEW and NI TestStand to reduce manual intervention and human error on the production line.
Design-for-test influence
Influences product design teams to incorporate design-for-test principles early in the development lifecycle, reducing downstream test complexity and cost.
Test strategy and roadmapping
Defines and implements best-in-class manufacturing test practices and creates a clear roadmap to achieve them, spanning module, server, rack, and cluster assembly levels.
Root cause analysis of test anomalies
Serves as senior technical authority for root cause analysis of test anomalies, driving systemic corrective actions across programs and product lines.
Customer test integration
Leads the integration of customer test requirements, software, and infrastructure into factory test systems.
Technician training and technical guidance
Provides training and guidance to the manufacturing test group on proper use of test equipment and fixtures, and technical direction to lower-level engineers.
Test documentation
Writes detailed test procedures and reports needed for manufacturing test, explaining instructions to technicians and preparing documentation for other engineers and future reference.
