What this role is
A senior technical authority who ensures the safe, reliable operation and maintenance of engine room and nuclear plant systems. At the Expert Professional (P5) level, the role owns multiple systems or a technical domain, establishes the approach, and drives org / multi-team outcomes. Leads cross-team technical initiatives.
What this level does
- Own the reliability strategy for a facility or major program, acting independently on broad assignments that contribute to plant availability and cost objectives
- Lead and coordinate multiple engineering maintenance projects with extensive technical expertise, serving as prime technical contact for contracts and vendor engagements
- Design site-specific reliability methods — refining RCM, RCA, and predictive-maintenance practice beyond textbook application into approaches tailored to the plant's failure history
- Build influential networks with OEMs, contractors, and peer plants, serving as external spokesperson on maintenance reliability matters
- Diagnose the highest-impact chronic reliability barriers and devise new techniques when established approaches stop yielding availability gains
- Knowledge applied
- Applies expert, plant-specific reliability mastery, designing refined methods beyond standard practice.
- Complexity & problem solving
- Works on strategic, ambiguous reliability problems with high independence, using feedback to attack availability barriers.
- Collaboration & interaction
- Builds influential external networks with OEMs and peer plants; acts as spokesperson.
- Typical experience
- 12+ years, extensive reliability expertise.
Skills at this level
- Reliability/Maintenance Methodologies
- — Applies maintenance systems used by high-performing plants — Root Cause Analysis, Reliability-Centered Maintenance, and TPM — to eliminate recurring failures, maximize plant capacity, and minimize cost.
- Interpreting Technical Schematics
- — Reads and interprets equipment schematics and drawings alongside diagnostic tool output to locate and diagnose mechanical and electrical faults in plant and mining equipment.
- Multi-Craft Maintenance
- — Performs work spanning two or more crafts — pipe fitting, HVAC maintenance, insulating, welding, machining, carpentry, and electrical/mechanical repair — including installing, aligning, and balancing new equipment.
- Mechanical and Pneumatic Systems
- — Maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs the mechanical and pneumatic systems that drive plant equipment, restoring them to OEM operating standards.
- Preventive and Predictive Maintenance
- — Plans and performs routine equipment monitoring, lubrication, and service, and schedules inspections and overhauls per process standards to ensure reliability and uptime.
- CMMS Recordkeeping
- — Uses a Computerized Maintenance Management System (e.g., Ellipse) to record work orders, log service and lubrication history, withdraw inventory, and analyze failure and downtime data for reliability decisions.
- Breakdown Response and Troubleshooting
- — Responds to production-loss breakdowns, troubleshooting and repairing failures quickly and accurately while observing safety precautions to keep line downtime minimal and prevent recurrence.
- Boiler and HRSG Fleet Reliability
- — Coordinates repairs, combustion tuning, and performance across fleet-wide equipment such as coal- and gas-fired boilers, Heat Recovery Steam Generators, and balance-of-plant systems.
- Spare Parts and Maintenance Standardization
- — Standardizes maintenance procedures and spare-parts strategies across equipment classes to make reliability outcomes repeatable and cost-effective across the site or fleet.
- Maintenance Project Leadership
- — Leads and coordinates multiple engineering maintenance projects, developing and improving techniques and procedures and serving as prime technical contact for contracts and vendors.
- Safety Focus
- — Observes and enforces all safety protocols during troubleshooting, repair, and equipment installation, treating safe work practice as a precondition of every maintenance task.
