What this role is

Senior technician who coordinates daily pharmacy workflow and mentors other technicians while handling the most complex dispensing tasks. At the Principal Support Specialist (S5) level, the role owns function-wide support practice, program-level and systemic support problems, and drives support strategy across the function. Subject-matter authority; shapes the practice.

What this level does

  • Serve as the pharmacy's expert technician in a specialty area (e.g. sterile/nuclear compounding or medication history), developing and documenting new intake, fill or reconciliation procedures within that area
  • Design and refine technician workflow standards — station layouts, queue-triage rules, downtime procedures — and validate them against regulatory requirements before rollout
  • Lead the technician group as a working lead: onboard new technicians, build the training path, and provide day-to-day guidance and coverage decisions without holding formal supervisory authority
  • Analyze pharmacy management system data on fill volume, rejection rates and inventory turns to recommend procedural and stocking improvements to the pharmacist-in-charge
