What this role is

Applies lean manufacturing methods to streamline production processes and accelerate design-to-volume transitions. At the Mid-Level Professional (P3) level, the role owns features or a sub-system end-to-end, adapts existing approaches, and drives project / team outcomes. Mentors juniors informally.

What this level does

  • Independently plan and lead value stream mapping and Kaizen events across a diverse set of processes within a value stream, developing actionable current- and future-state improvement plans
  • Drive permanent resolution of quality and productivity issues by owning root cause analysis and countermeasure implementation, escalating only cross-value-stream conflicts
  • Estimate and validate time standards and lean layout changes (cellular design, material flow) for new and existing product lines, coordinating implementation activities with operations
  • Establish and sustain visual management, standard work and TPM routines across multiple lines, coaching operators and supervisors to maintain the new standards
Knowledge applied
Independently applies the full lean toolkit across diverse processes, including cellular layout, TPM and DOE, evaluating identifiable process factors.
Complexity & problem solving
Diverse problems across a value stream; plans own work and owns root cause through implementation.
Collaboration & interaction
Networks with senior professionals across operations; coordinates implementation activities and coaches operators and supervisors.
Typical experience
5+ yrs (BA), 3+ yrs (MA); often Black Belt certified.

Skills at this level

Value Stream Mapping
Maps the current- and future-state flow of material and information through a production process to expose non-value-added activity and prioritize improvement plans.
5S Workplace Organization
Audits and organizes shop-floor workstations through Sort, Set-in-order, Shine, Standardize and Sustain to reduce waste and stabilize processes.
Kaizen Facilitation
Organizes and runs focused rapid-improvement workshops that engage operators to eliminate waste in changeovers, material flow and workplace organization.
Root Cause Problem Solving
Uses 5 Whys and structured analysis to permanently resolve quality and productivity issues in manufacturing operations rather than applying temporary fixes.
SMED / Changeover Reduction
Analyzes and reengineers setup and changeover activities to shorten downtime between production runs and improve line flexibility.
Kanban and Pull Systems
Designs signal-based inventory replenishment to synchronize production to demand and reduce work-in-process across the value stream.
Total Productive Maintenance (TPM)
Establishes operator-driven and preventive maintenance routines that increase equipment availability and reduce unplanned production losses.
Poka-yoke Error-Proofing
Designs mistake-proofing devices and process controls into workstations to prevent defects from occurring or passing downstream.
PDCA Improvement Cycle
Designs and implements lean processes by following the structured Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle to verify that countermeasures deliver sustained results.
Lean Six Sigma / DOE
Applies Lean Six Sigma methodologies and Design of Experiments to resolve entrenched process-capability and quality problems statistically.
Time Standards and Cost Estimation
Determines manufacturing time standards to estimate production costs and justify process-improvement recommendations for new and existing product lines.
Cellular Manufacturing Layout
Designs work cells and material flow layouts using 3P line-design methods to shorten travel, reduce WIP and improve throughput.
Visual Management
Builds visual boards and status displays that make production performance, standard work and abnormalities immediately apparent on the floor.
Cross-Functional Stakeholder Alignment
Aligns production, quality, maintenance and supply chain teams around lean principles to secure adoption of new practices at plant scale.
Manufacturing Software Systems
Uses ERP and MES systems to pull production, inventory and cycle-time data that grounds lean analysis and tracks improvement outcomes.
