What this role is

Frontline supervisor who leads a team applying lean manufacturing methods to speed products from design into high-volume production. At the Manager (Team Lead) (M1) level, the role owns a single team, day-to-day delivery and people issues, and drives team output and health. Direct people management of one team.

What this level does

  • Supervises a unit of lean/process technicians and engineers running day-to-day continuous-improvement activity on a defined production area, keeping time studies, 5S audits, and standard-work adherence on schedule
  • Conducts and audits time studies for productivity and supports estimating manufacturing costs by determining time standards for the area's processes
  • Facilitates 5S, changeover (SMED), and material-flow workshops at the workstation/line level and tracks closure of resulting action items
  • Leads front-line problem-solving on quality and productivity issues as they arise on the floor, escalating recurring problems that exceed established practice
  • Coaches operators and technicians in basic Lean tools (standard work, 5S, GEMBA walks, visual management) to sustain gains within the unit
Knowledge applied
Functional expert in core Lean tools (time studies, standard work, 5S, GEMBA) applying established practices to a single production unit.
Complexity & problem solving
Limited scope; resolves floor-level quality and productivity issues using known problem-solving methods, escalating anything outside established practice.
Collaboration & interaction
Daily interaction with operators, technicians, and peer supervisors within the unit.
Typical experience
Functional expert in lean/process work with some leadership exposure.

Root Cause Analysis
Uses structured problem-solving to identify the permanent root cause of recurring quality and productivity issues on the production floor and drives corrective control plans.
Time Study & Work Standards
Conducts and audits time studies to set time standards, measure productivity, and support estimation of manufacturing costs.
Workshop Facilitation & Kaizen Leadership
Organizes and facilitates improvement workshops (changeover, 5S, TPM, Value Stream, material flow), scoping opportunities and leading teams to solutions and control plans.
Lean Coaching & Capability Building
Coaches, trains, and mentors cross-functional teams in Lean/Six Sigma tools (GEMBA, DOE, TPI) to build capability and sustain adoption of improvements.
Workplace Flow & Layout Design
Plans and implements workplace flow, line layout, and equipment installations, modifications, and moves according to Lean concepts.
Manufacturing Systems (ERP/MES)
Uses ERP and MES systems to pull production data, track standards and losses, and feed improvement decisions in manufacturing operations.
New Line Start-up & NPI
Leads advanced manufacturing plans to start up new production lines, commission plants, and introduce new products into manufacturing operations.
Stakeholder Alignment for Lean Adoption
Aligns diverse teams around lean principles through communication and stakeholder engagement to ensure sustainable, measurable adoption.
Manufacturing Strategy & Technology Evaluation
Contributes to long-term manufacturing planning and evaluates new technologies such as digital manufacturing and AI-enabled process optimization for adoption.
