What this role is
Executive who leads the enterprise-wide lean manufacturing strategy from product concept through high-volume production ramp. At the Director (Executive) (E1) level, the role owns a significant function with strategic authority, strategic and cross-functional, and drives function-wide enterprise impact. Executive leadership of a function.
What this level does
- Lead the Lean/continuous-improvement function for a plant or sub-function through operations Directors, setting the annual Kaizen, 5S, TPM and Value Stream Mapping program and holding it to measurable cost, quality and productivity targets.
- Own plant-level improvement outcomes — championing new production line startups, plant commissioning and new-product introductions into manufacturing operations, and reporting waste-reduction and productivity results to site leadership.
- Embed Lean culture across the site workforce, directing the coaching, Work-Out and Six Sigma training programs that make Lean tools and mindset established practice rather than isolated projects.
- Interface with peer functional executives (Quality, Supply Chain, Engineering) and major customers on manufacturing capability, resolving the quality and productivity issues with serious functional consequence for the business unit.
- Set operational performance metrics and cascade improvement budgets across Director-led teams, ensuring improvements are sustainable and audited against the Quality Management System.
- Knowledge applied
- Applies deep functional Lean/Six Sigma knowledge and detailed company/plant knowledge to set functional strategy; translates Kaizen, 5S, TPM, VSM and QMS practice into a coherent site improvement program.
- Complexity & problem solving
- Resolves quality and productivity problems with serious functional/business consequence at plant scale; owns line startup, plant commissioning and NPI-into-manufacturing challenges.
- Collaboration & interaction
- Interfaces with peer functional executives and major customers on manufacturing capability; leads through operations Directors (M5s).
- Typical experience
- 12–15+ years of manufacturing/Lean experience with functional and management experience; typically Black Belt-level Lean Six Sigma mastery.
