What this role is

Individual contributor who manages day-to-day workplace safety and environmental compliance activities across a facility or region. At the Lead Support Specialist (S4) level, the role owns team process and quality, cross-case patterns and process gaps, and drives team-level quality and efficiency. Mentors and coordinates the support team.

What this level does

  • Adapt inspection and sampling methods to unfamiliar or unprecedented site conditions where the standard checklist does not fit, documenting the approach taken
  • Handle a wide variety of non-routine EHS situations and conflicting compliance requirements, recommending revised controls or work practices to professional staff
  • Determine methods and sequencing for new monitoring assignments across multiple work areas without prescribed procedure
  • Serve as a working lead for less experienced EHS technicians — assigning inspection and sampling routines, checking their records, and resolving procedural questions
  • Coordinate cross-location compliance tasks such as multi-site permit renewals and audit readiness, reconciling differing local practices

Safety Inspection Programs
Plans, sequences and runs scheduled inspections and safety checks against health, safety and environmental standards, recording findings and confirming that controls, equipment and work practices meet requirements.
Environmental & Industrial-Hygiene Sampling
Collects air, noise, respiratory and other environmental/hygiene samples following defined protocols; labels, logs and hands off specimens and flags out-of-range results.
Monitoring Equipment Maintenance & Calibration
Maintains and calibrates gas meters, sound-level and air-sampling devices on schedule, verifying readings and taking instruments out of service when out of tolerance.
EHS Compliance Recordkeeping

Regulatory Compliance Knowledge
Applies working knowledge of health, safety and environmental regulations to identify and control exposures during inspections and to determine whether conditions meet standards.
Hazard Identification & Escalation
Recognizes potential exposures and unsafe conditions during checks, distinguishes routine from non-routine findings, and escalates or corrects within established procedure.
Corrective Action Follow-Up
Investigates inspection and sampling findings, determines the appropriate corrective step within procedure, and tracks it to closure to prevent recurrence.
Permit & Waste Compliance Coordination
Tracks permit renewals and waste-disposal and program compliance requirements across a site, ensuring deadlines and documentation are met.
Procedure Development
Creates and standardizes new inspection checklists, sampling protocols and calibration procedures within the EHS support area and rolls them out to technicians.
Compliance Reporting & Data Analysis
Compiles inspection, sampling and incident data into compliance reports, identifying patterns and trends for professional EHS staff.
Scientific & Technical Foundation
