What this role is
An experienced technologist who independently collects, processes, and interprets earth-science field data to support resource exploration and management decisions. At the Lead Support Specialist (S4) level, the role owns team process and quality, cross-case patterns and process gaps, and drives team-level quality and efficiency. Mentors and coordinates the support team.
What this level does
- Adapts sampling and mapping methods for unfamiliar or difficult sites (remote terrain, unusual lithology, tight access) where the standard procedure does not fit, and recommends the modified approach to the lead geoscientist
- Resolves a wide variety of non-routine field and data conflicts — instrument failures, contradictory well-log/borehole records, GIS georeferencing problems — determining the method to fix them
- Acts as a working lead on field campaigns, sequencing tasks, allocating equipment, and informally guiding less experienced technologists through the sampling and logging workflow
- Owns environmental-impact monitoring of exploration/mining activities, adjusting monitoring points and frequency as site conditions change
- Compiles integrated data packages (samples, logs, maps, remote-sensing/aerial-photo interpretation) that geologists rely on for interpretation and recommendations

- Remote Sensing and Aerial Photo Interpretation
- — Works with remote-sensing imagery and aerial photographs to support mapping and site characterization for the geoscience team.
- Environmental Impact Monitoring
- — Monitors the environmental effects of mining and exploration activity, adjusting monitoring points and frequency as site conditions change.
- Field Safety Compliance
- — Applies and enforces safety standards during fieldwork, from posted procedures at entry level to leading safe practice across a field campaign.
- Field Study Support and Coordination
- — Assists in designing and executing field studies — laying out sampling grids and traverses and sequencing tasks and equipment within the geoscientist's approach.
