What this role is
An experienced store associate who handles advanced sales, customer service, and operational tasks with minimal supervision. At the Senior Support Specialist (S3) level, the role owns escalated / complex cases, complex or non-standard cases, and drives resolution quality on the team's hardest cases. Guides junior support informally.
What this level does
- Run the sales floor independently during assigned shifts with little day-to-day instruction, making judgment calls on staffing coverage, break scheduling and task prioritization to keep service levels up
- Resolve moderately difficult customer-service issues — disputed returns, complaints, damaged-goods claims — applying detailed knowledge of store policy without escalating routine cases
- Investigate inventory discrepancies and shrinkage indicators surfaced by the register/inventory system, tracing the cause (miskeyed receipts, mispriced items, cycle-count errors) and correcting records
- Coordinate the receiving-to-floor flow — sequencing deliveries, ordering, receiving and pricing — so merchandise moves to the floor on time and presentation standards are maintained
- Support the store manager by owning specific operational areas (e.g. inventory or merchandising) day-to-day without final decision-making authority for store results
- Knowledge applied
- Detailed knowledge of store procedures sufficient to run the floor and resolve non-routine customer and inventory issues independently.
- Complexity & problem solving
- Exercises judgment on moderately difficult problems — shrinkage discrepancies, service disputes, shift coverage — with little instruction on daily work.
- Collaboration & interaction
- Coordinates tasks across associates on shift; substantial procedural understanding but no formal leadership authority.
- Typical experience
- 2–4 yrs; skilled in store operations
Skills at this level
- Register & POS Transaction Processing
- — Processes sales, returns, exchanges and price overrides through the store's register system, reconciling cash drawers and end-of-day totals accurately.
- Inventory System Operation
- — Scans, receives and prices merchandise into the store inventory system, keeping stock records accurate and investigating count discrepancies between the back room and sales floor.
- Receiving & Stock Flow
- — Verifies incoming deliveries against packing lists, sequences and prices stock, and moves merchandise from receiving to the floor on schedule.
- Visual Merchandising & Presentation Standards
- — Places product to planogram, faces and recovers displays, and maintains the in-store presentation and organizational standards set by the manager and corporate office.
- Customer Service Resolution
- — Handles customer questions, complaints and disputed returns on the floor, applying store policy and escalating only cases that fall outside it.
- Shrinkage & Loss Prevention
- — Recognizes shrink indicators in transaction and inventory data, traces causes such as mispriced or miskeyed items, and applies corrective steps to protect stock accuracy.
- Shift Coordination
- — Sequences floor tasks, staffing coverage and breaks across associates on a shift to sustain service levels without formal supervisory authority.
- Store Opening & Closing Procedures
- — Executes the multi-step opening and closing routines including security/alarm checks, drawer counts and end-of-day reporting per store procedure.
- Operational Problem Adaptation
- — Determines workable methods when established store procedures fail — system outages, delivery failures, staffing gaps — to keep the location operating.
- Associate Training & Working Lead
- — Guides and trains less-experienced associates on register, receiving and merchandising procedures, setting the depth-of-procedure standard as an informal working lead.
- Store Procedure Development
- — Creates and documents new operating procedures and job aids for floor, register and stock routines, then rolls them out and standardizes them across the team.
- Store Performance Monitoring
- — Reads store performance signals such as sales-per-hour, out-of-stocks and shrink trends, and recommends concrete operational changes to improve them.
