What this role is

Assembles, tests, and installs battery storage systems at renewable energy plants, working independently on standard projects. At the Mid-Level Professional (P3) level, the role owns features or a sub-system end-to-end, adapts existing approaches, and drives project / team outcomes. Mentors juniors informally.

What this level does

  • Coordinate the response to plant emergencies such as power outages and equipment failures to preserve life and equipment, and plan and hold drills to ensure crisis-response readiness
  • Independently plan day-to-day operation of a defined set of renewable generation assets, prioritizing site visits and remote-troubleshooting activities against generation targets
  • Diagnose intermittent SCADA and PPC control-system faults, evaluating identifiable factors to distinguish sensor errors, communication faults, and genuine equipment failures
  • Track net capacity factor and generation performance across assigned units and recommend operating adjustments to close performance gaps
  • Network with maintenance, engineering, and dispatch professionals to resolve recurring operational issues and coordinate corrective work
  • Mentor operators on meter reading, calibration routines, feedstock handling, and control-system basics
Knowledge applied
Applies in-depth operating knowledge and net-capacity-factor calculation to a diverse set of renewable assets, planning own work with day-to-day independence.
Complexity & problem solving
Evaluates identifiable factors to diagnose intermittent control-system and equipment faults and coordinate emergency response.
Collaboration & interaction
Networks with maintenance, engineering, and dispatch professionals; may coordinate project activities.
Typical experience
5+ years (relevant qualification), or equivalent operations experience across renewable technologies.

Skills at this level

SCADA-based remote monitoring
Uses Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition systems, PLCs, and data loggers to remotely monitor wind, solar, hydro, and bioenergy assets, detect faults, and control generation from a control room.
Net capacity factor (NCF) calculation
Calculates net capacity factors for renewable technologies and uses the results to optimize project technology, plant layout, and dispatch decisions.
Power Plant Controller (PPC) integration
Configures and troubleshoots Power Plant Controllers to regulate active/reactive power and meet grid-interconnection setpoints across renewable generation units.
Cybersecurity, communication protocols and networking
Secures and troubleshoots the communication protocols, networking, and schematic diagrams underpinning renewable control systems to protect and sustain SCADA/PPC monitoring.
Mechanical skills
Uses tools and works with generation machinery, applying preventive maintenance and electricity fundamentals such as voltage and electricity flow.
Bioenergy feedstock and process handling
Controls chemical reactions, processes intermediate products, and moves feedstock through a bioenergy plant while keeping process conditions within specified ranges.
Detail orientation / vigilant monitoring
Carefully watches controls and machinery, reading meters and logging values to confirm equipment operates within parameters and to catch out-of-range conditions early.
Manual dexterity
Uses precise, repeated motions to operate and calibrate equipment and manipulate control-room components.
Emergency and crisis-response coordination
Coordinates the response to power outages and equipment failures to preserve life and equipment, and plans and runs drills to ensure crisis-response readiness.
Generation performance optimization
Analyzes curtailment, availability, and NCF across variable resource conditions and recommends operating adjustments to close generation performance gaps.
