What this role is
Monitors and controls combustion turbines, compressors, and production systems from the plant control board to maintain safe, efficient operations. At the Lead Support Specialist (S4) level, the role owns team process and quality, cross-case patterns and process gaps, and drives team-level quality and efficiency. Mentors and coordinates the support team.
What this level does
- Adapt operating methods in unfamiliar or unprecedented plant conditions where the standard procedure does not fully apply, determining the safe course and documenting the deviation
- Respond to system or unit abnormalities — diagnosing root cause and taking or recommending corrective action across boiler, turbine and generator systems
- Handle a wide variety of non-routine situations and conflicting priorities during upsets, trips and emergency response, resolving them with resourceful use of plant knowledge
- Serve as informal working lead for a shift crew — assigning operating tasks, coordinating field and control-room work, and guiding less experienced operators through complex evolutions
- Maintain and interpret knowledge of all plant environmental emission parameters and NERC Reliability Standards, judging when plant status requires notification, curtailment or shutdown
- Knowledge applied
- Extensive detailed knowledge of plant procedures and their administration, enough to adapt operating methods in unprecedented situations and interpret emission and reliability standards.
- Complexity & problem solving
- Handles a wide variety of non-routine situations and conflicts — abnormal-event diagnosis, corrective action and emergency response; understands implications and recommends new solutions.
- Collaboration & interaction
- May act as informal working lead for the shift crew, guiding less experienced operators and coordinating field and control-room work.
- Typical experience
- 4–6 years; advanced operating experience across multiple plant systems and conditions.
Skills at this level
- Operation Control
- — Operates and controls power-generating equipment — boilers, turbines, generators and reactors — from control boards or semi-automatic equipment, and starts or stops generators and auxiliary pumping equipment as plant conditions require.
- Equipment Monitoring
- — Watches control-room gauges, dials and indicators and performs field inspections to confirm plant machinery is operating within posted limits and to detect early evidence of operating problems.
- Control System Operation (DCS/SCADA)
- — Monitors, records and charts plant performance and variances through distributed control systems (GE Mark VI, Yokogawa FAST/TOOLS) and SCADA interfaces, using them to run equipment and track unit status across a shift.
- Plant Information System Charting
- — Uses the OSI PI plant information system to collect, trend and document regulatory readings and performance variances, keeping accurate operating records for compliance and diagnosis.
- Grid Output Synchronization
- — Controls generator output to match the phase, frequency and voltage of electricity supplied to panels, balancing plant output against grid demand.
- Water Chemistry Control
- — Monitors and tests boiler water chemistry against written guidelines and adjusts dosing to maintain proper steam quality and protect boiler systems.
- Critical Thinking and Troubleshooting
- — Uses logic and reasoning to identify and diagnose process problems, weigh alternative corrective actions, and correct issues within operator authority in a timely manner.
- Emergency and Abnormal-Event Response
- — Applies knowledge of plant systems, the relay tripping scheme and emergency response procedures to diagnose system or unit abnormalities and execute the correct procedure during upsets, trips and emergencies.
- Regulatory and Emission Compliance Knowledge
- — Maintains working knowledge of plant environmental emission parameters and NERC Reliability Standards, ensuring operations stay within permit limits and judging when status requires notification or curtailment.
- Licensing and Qualification
- — Completes company-sponsored training and qualification/certification programs required to operate plant equipment; holds formal operator licensing where mandated, such as in nuclear operations.
- Operating Documentation and Record-Keeping
- — Accurately collects and logs regulatory readings, performance data and variances, producing clean shift records that support compliance and handover.
- Operator Coaching and Training
- — Trains and mentors new operators and mechanic-technicians on plant processes, control interfaces and procedures, guiding them toward independent qualification.
