What this role is

An experienced hands-on tradesperson who independently performs complex repair, installation, and maintenance tasks across multiple skilled trade disciplines. At the Lead Support Specialist (S4) level, the role owns team process and quality, cross-case patterns and process gaps, and drives team-level quality and efficiency. Mentors and coordinates the support team.

  • Adapt trade methods and repair approaches in unfamiliar or unprecedented situations across two or more trades
  • Assess the implications of a repair on connected building systems and recommend new solutions to unfamiliar failures
  • Supervise and informally guide less-experienced staff and apprentices in maintenance, repair, installation and construction activities
  • Troubleshoot the most difficult non-routine problems on complex projects, resourcefully completing work with minimal instruction
  • Determine the methods, materials and sequencing for new multi-trade assignments

Hands-on tool mastery
Uses, operates and maintains hand tools, power tools and trade machinery safely to perform assembly, installation, repair and inspection work.
Blueprint and Specification Reading
Studies and interprets blueprints, diagrams and specifications to plan and execute maintenance, construction and renovation tasks correctly.
Building Maintenance
Performs general and skilled maintenance and repair of campus buildings including doors, hardware, carpentry and life-safety systems.
HVAC and Central Plant Systems
Installs and maintains HVAC mechanical systems and components with working knowledge of DDC controls, boilers, chillers and central plant operation.
Multi-Trade Proficiency
Performs journey-level work in one trade and skilled/semiskilled work in a combination of others — plumbing, electrical, mechanical, carpentry and masonry.
Non-Routine Troubleshooting
Diagnoses and resolves non-routine facility and equipment failures independently, determining root cause and the correct repair method.
Preventive Maintenance
Plans and performs scheduled inspections and preventive-maintenance activities on equipment and building systems to keep them reliable and compliant.
Safety and Code Compliance
Applies job-site safety practices and trade codes, and at master level carries sign-off and licensing responsibility for completed work.
Recordkeeping and Reporting
Maintains routine records and reports of maintenance, repair and inspection work performed on facilities and equipment.
Work Coordination and Sequencing
Coordinates and sequences multi-trade tasks on a project and, at senior levels, guides the work of apprentices and less-experienced tradespeople.
