What this role is

Directs all refinery processing operations, setting strategy and overseeing multiple units and managers to meet production, safety, and compliance goals. At the Senior Director (M5) level, the role owns multiple functions or a large department, org-level trade-offs and investment, and drives multi-function results. Leads directors and managers.

What this level does

  • Direct site-wide refinery operations through area superintendents, accountable for the plant's overall production, safety and operating-cost performance
  • Define operating methods, staffing models and process-safety management systems that apply division- or site-wide across all process units
  • Resolve complex, plant-spanning operating issues — competing unit constraints, feedstock changes, major upset recovery — setting the framework operations leaders use to decide
  • Influence executives and major stakeholders (corporate operations, refining leadership, key customers) on production commitments, run plans and reliability performance
  • Own the operations organization's capability strategy — leadership pipeline, qualification standards and headcount — across the site
Knowledge applied
Defines site-wide operating methods and process-safety management systems; applies division-level judgment to plant production, safety and cost performance.

Operator Qualification and Mentoring
Trains and signs off operators through the field-to-console progression, running structured qualification across the unit's process operations.
Production Reporting and Performance Tracking
Generates production reports and tracks performance indicators (yield, reliability, off-spec events) to guide operating decisions and improvement.
Turnaround and Intervention Coordination
Plans and sequences maintenance windows, isolations, drains and returns to service with maintenance and technical functions to balance continuity against equipment risk.
Continuous Improvement in Operations
Applies continuous-improvement practice to plant operations, sponsoring changes to procedures, console strategies and energy/yield performance.
Operations Workforce Planning
