What this role is
Senior individual contributor who leads control-board operations and coordinates major maintenance planning at a power or mining plant. At the Principal Support Specialist (S5) level, the role owns function-wide support practice, program-level and systemic support problems, and drives support strategy across the function. Subject-matter authority; shapes the practice.
What this level does
- Contribute to the creation and revision of operating, emergency-response and compliance procedures based on operating experience and abnormal-event analysis
- Resolve the most complex operating problems and lead the plant through major abnormal events, developing operating techniques for conditions not covered by existing procedures
- Act as working lead and technical authority for operators across shifts, providing guidance, qualification sign-off support, and coaching on plant processes and emergency scenarios
- Train new operators and mechanic-technicians (OMTs) on plant systems, control interfaces and procedures, and mentor them toward independent qualification
- Establish charting and trending standards in the plant information system (OSI PI System), defining how performance and variance data is captured so operators across shifts monitor and diagnose plant status consistently
- Knowledge applied
- Highly skilled specialist in plant operation; contributes to the creation of operating, emergency and compliance procedures and to operating-technique development.
- Complexity & problem solving
- Resolves complex operating issues and leads through major abnormal events, developing techniques for conditions not covered by existing procedures.
- Collaboration & interaction
- Acts as working lead and technical authority across shifts, providing peer guidance, coaching and new-operator training.
- Typical experience

Skills at this level
- Operation Control
- — Operates and controls power-generating equipment — boilers, turbines, generators and reactors — from control boards or semi-automatic equipment, and starts or stops generators and auxiliary pumping equipment as plant conditions require.
- Equipment Monitoring
- — Watches control-room gauges, dials and indicators and performs field inspections to confirm plant machinery is operating within posted limits and to detect early evidence of operating problems.
- Control System Operation (DCS/SCADA)
- — Monitors, records and charts plant performance and variances through distributed control systems (GE Mark VI, Yokogawa FAST/TOOLS) and SCADA interfaces, using them to run equipment and track unit status across a shift.
- Plant Information System Charting
- — Uses the OSI PI plant information system to collect, trend and document regulatory readings and performance variances, keeping accurate operating records for compliance and diagnosis.
- Grid Output Synchronization
- — Controls generator output to match the phase, frequency and voltage of electricity supplied to panels, balancing plant output against grid demand.
- Water Chemistry Control
- — Monitors and tests boiler water chemistry against written guidelines and adjusts dosing to maintain proper steam quality and protect boiler systems.
- Critical Thinking and Troubleshooting
- — Uses logic and reasoning to identify and diagnose process problems, weigh alternative corrective actions, and correct issues within operator authority in a timely manner.
- Emergency and Abnormal-Event Response
- — Applies knowledge of plant systems, the relay tripping scheme and emergency response procedures to diagnose system or unit abnormalities and execute the correct procedure during upsets, trips and emergencies.
- Regulatory and Emission Compliance Knowledge
- — Maintains working knowledge of plant environmental emission parameters and NERC Reliability Standards, ensuring operations stay within permit limits and judging when status requires notification or curtailment.
- Licensing and Qualification
- — Completes company-sponsored training and qualification/certification programs required to operate plant equipment; holds formal operator licensing where mandated, such as in nuclear operations.
- Operating Documentation and Record-Keeping
- — Accurately collects and logs regulatory readings, performance data and variances, producing clean shift records that support compliance and handover.
- Operator Coaching and Training
- — Trains and mentors new operators and mechanic-technicians on plant processes, control interfaces and procedures, guiding them toward independent qualification.
