What this role is

Senior individual contributor who leads eyewear dispensing and fitting operations, guiding fellow opticians on complex cases and quality standards. At the Principal Support Specialist (S5) level, the role owns function-wide support practice, program-level and systemic support problems, and drives support strategy across the function. Subject-matter authority; shapes the practice.

What this level does

  • Acts as the store's dispensing specialist and working lead, resolving the most complex fitting and remake problems and setting the standard for measurement and dispensing accuracy across the team
  • Creates and documents store dispensing, measurement-verification, and repair procedures — and refines POS/insurance workflows — then rolls them out to peers as the reference method
  • Develops the training approach and reference materials for onboarding optical associates, facilitating peer execution rather than supervising headcount
  • Owns vendor and lab relationships at the operational level — evaluating lab quality, remake trends, and frame-line performance, and feeding findings into ordering and merchandising decisions
  • Serves as final internal authority on non-routine insurance, warranty, and quality escalations, developing new handling approaches when existing procedures fail to cover the situation
Knowledge applied
Highly skilled specialist in retail optical dispensing; contributes to the creation of new procedures and reference methods within the store.
Complexity & problem solving
Resolves the most complex fitting, quality, and escalation issues; develops techniques and standards others follow.
Collaboration & interaction
Acts independently as a working lead and facilitator; provides peer guidance and owns operational vendor/lab relationships — without formal headcount authority.
Typical experience
6+ years; expert in optical dispensing operations.

Skills at this level

Eyewear Measurement
Takes accurate measurements of the eyes and facial features — including pupillary distance via pupillometer and frame-fit dimensions — to specify lenses that will sit and read correctly for the customer.
Frame and Lens Dispensing
Recommends frames, lens types, and coatings suited to the customer's prescription and needs, and dispenses finished eyewear, confirming fit and clarity at hand-off.
Eyewear Adjustment and Repair
Adjusts and repairs eyewear — heat-fitting frames, replacing nosepads, and fixing temples, hinges, and screws — to restore correct fit and function on customer glasses.
Lensometry
Uses a lensometer to read and verify lens power, add, and axis in a finished pair against the work order to confirm the lab produced the prescription correctly.
Lab Work Order Preparation
Prepares work orders for optical technicians and outside labs, specifying lens material, coatings, tints, and measurements so the correct lenses are manufactured.
Lens Edging and Finishing
Operates lens edging and optical finishing equipment to cut lenses to frame shape, observing the safety protocols required at the retail bench.
Point-of-Sale Order Processing
Completes and processes sales orders promptly and accurately on the optical POS system, capturing lens, frame, and pricing details and tracking order status to pick-up.
Vision Insurance Verification
Verifies customer vision-plan eligibility and benefits, applies coverage to orders, and reconciles or troubleshoots rejected claims with the plan and the customer.
Frame Inventory Management
Merchandises frame boards and tracks eyewear stock — counting, restocking, and reordering frames and accessories to keep the sales floor stocked and presentable.
Optical Retail Customer Service
Guides eyewear customers through selection and fitting, resolves complaints and remakes, and manages expectations on order timing to retain the customer's business.
Optical Equipment Operation
Uses specialized optical equipment — calipers, lensometers, pupillometers, and lens gauges — to measure, verify, and finish eyewear accurately.
