What this role is

Directs all machining and robotic manufacturing operations across a facility or multiple production lines. At the Senior Director (M5) level, the role owns multiple functions or a large department, org-level trade-offs and investment, and drives multi-function results. Leads directors and managers.

What this level does

  • Directs the machine shop as a strategic area whose output impacts overall plant or division operations, leading through department managers
  • Defines the methods and standards for shop-wide machining capability, process strategy, and CNC/CAM technology adoption
  • Influences executives and major customers on machining capacity, capital investment, and complex program feasibility
  • Resolves complex org-wide manufacturing issues — technology transitions, make-vs-buy on machining work, and capability gaps
  • Owns the division machining budget and long-lead capital equipment strategy (CNC, laser/water-jet, wire EDM, metrology)
Knowledge applied
Applies division-wide understanding to define machining methods, standards, and technology direction.
Complexity & problem solving
Resolves complex org-wide machining issues and defines the methods for capability and capital strategy.
Collaboration & interaction
Influences executives and major customers on machining capacity and key investment decisions.
Typical experience
10–12+ years including second-level management and manufacturing strategy work.

Skills at this level

Machine tool operation (mechanical skills)
Directs and validates operation of milling machines, lathes, grinders, laser and water jetting machines, wire EDM, and other machine tools across a shop.
Precision measurement and GD&T
Governs accurate measurement of machined parts to within .0001 of an inch and enforces geometric dimensioning and tolerancing in inspection practice.
Tooling knowledge and process selection
Sets standards for good manufacturing practice and for selecting tooling and machining resources to produce parts efficiently and to spec.
Blueprint and design-data analysis
Interprets drawings, blueprints, models, and design data to confirm part dimensions, tool selection, machine speeds, and feed rates before production.
CNC programming (G-code) and CAM strategy
Oversees development, writing, and fine-tuning of CNC machine code in G-code and CAD/CAM software, setting programming standards across the shop.
Machining mathematics
Applies and verifies calculations of speeds, feeds, and dimensions that drive machining setup decisions.
Manufacturing process improvement
Owns improvement of entire machining processes and shop-wide capability rather than the running of individual machines.
Shop capacity and budget management
Plans machining capacity across machine types and manages departmental operating and capital budgets against demand.
Machining workforce leadership
Builds machinist capability and staffs, coaches, and directs machining teams from cell leads to department managers.
Machining capital equipment strategy
Sets direction on acquisition of CNC, laser/water-jet, wire EDM, and metrology assets to advance shop process capability.
