What this role is

Leads multiple machine shop teams and managers, overseeing CNC and robotic machining operations across shifts or programs to meet quality, cost, and output goals. At the Director (M4) level, the role owns a function or department, strategic priorities and cross-functional alignment, and drives function-level results. Leads managers; sets direction for the function.

What this level does

  • Manages multiple machining sections or a critical shop function, aligning machining capability with plant business objectives
  • Sets machining process and CNC programming policy where a lapse could jeopardize delivery, quality, or safety across the operation
  • Engages senior manufacturing and engineering leaders on capacity, capital equipment, and process strategy
  • Directs the CNC programming and CAD/CAM standards that govern how complex parts are developed, written, and fine-tuned shop-wide
  • Oversees the department managers' operating budgets and workforce plans across the sections under their control
Knowledge applied
Applies strategic knowledge of machining capability and CNC/CAM technology to align multiple sections with business objectives.
Complexity & problem solving
Sets strategic machining and programming policy on issues that could jeopardize delivery, quality, or safety.
Collaboration & interaction
Engages senior manufacturing and engineering leaders on machining strategy and capital.
Typical experience
8–10+ years with complex multi-team machining leadership.

Skills at this level

Directs and validates operation of milling machines, lathes, grinders, laser and water jetting machines, wire EDM, and other machine tools across a shop.
Precision measurement and GD&T
Governs accurate measurement of machined parts to within .0001 of an inch and enforces geometric dimensioning and tolerancing in inspection practice.
Tooling knowledge and process selection
Sets standards for good manufacturing practice and for selecting tooling and machining resources to produce parts efficiently and to spec.
Blueprint and design-data analysis
Interprets drawings, blueprints, models, and design data to confirm part dimensions, tool selection, machine speeds, and feed rates before production.
CNC programming (G-code) and CAM strategy
Oversees development, writing, and fine-tuning of CNC machine code in G-code and CAD/CAM software, setting programming standards across the shop.
Machining mathematics
Applies and verifies calculations of speeds, feeds, and dimensions that drive machining setup decisions.
Manufacturing process improvement
Owns improvement of entire machining processes and shop-wide capability rather than the running of individual machines.
Shop capacity and budget management
Plans machining capacity across machine types and manages departmental operating and capital budgets against demand.
Machining workforce leadership
Builds machinist capability and staffs, coaches, and directs machining teams from cell leads to department managers.
Machining capital equipment strategy
Sets direction on acquisition of CNC, laser/water-jet, wire EDM, and metrology assets to advance shop process capability.
