What this role is

A highly experienced individual contributor who leads complex geophysical analyses to guide major energy, mining, and environmental decisions. At the Expert Professional (P5) level, the role owns multiple systems or a technical domain, establishes the approach, and drives org / multi-team outcomes. Leads cross-team technical initiatives.

What this level does

  • Act as the recognized expert authority for geophysical interpretation on the most significant or technically unusual assignments, resolving intangible subsurface uncertainties where standard methods fall short
  • Establish quality-control standards and interpretation methodologies adopted across multiple projects and teams
  • Develop training programs and mentor senior geophysicists in specialized acquisition and inversion techniques
  • Serve as external technical spokesperson in client meetings, tenders, and expert review of complex survey designs
  • Advise on high-stakes go/no-go decisions by defending technical conclusions on hazard and resource risk
Knowledge applied
Recognized expert applying highly developed interpretation representations to strategic, unique, or high-uncertainty assignments.
Complexity & problem solving
Resolves intangible subsurface uncertainties with high independence where standard methods are insufficient, working at the boundary of current capability.
Collaboration & interaction
Builds influential internal and external networks; acts as technical spokesperson in tenders and expert reviews.
Typical experience
12+ years with extensive geophysical expertise.

Skills at this level

Geophysical Survey Design & Acquisition
Plans and conducts field surveys by selecting seismic, electromagnetic, gravity, magnetic, or resistivity methods and configuring instruments such as seismometers and earth-imaging arrays to acquire subsurface measurements fit for the project objective.
Geophysical Data Interpretation
Interprets processed seismic, EM, gravity, and magnetic datasets to characterize subsurface conditions, structures, and hazards, relating geophysical signatures to geological meaning.
Subsurface 3D Modeling
Builds and refines three-dimensional models of the subsurface from integrated geophysical data to visualize structures and support interpretation and decision-making.
Geophysical Data QC
Performs quality control on acquired and processed geophysical data and on project deliverables, checking against acceptance criteria to ensure integrity of surveys and reports.
Geophysical Databases & Reporting
Develops and maintains geophysical databases and writes technical reports that document survey methods, results, and recommendations for clients and employers.
Computing, Mapping & GIS/GPS
Uses computing, mapping, and GIS/GPS tools to program, enter data, and process geophysical information, including positioning survey data spatially.
Programming & Advanced Analytics for Geophysics
Applies Python and MATLAB scripting and machine-learning/advanced-analytics techniques to automate geophysical processing, inversion, and pattern detection in large datasets.
Analytical & Problem-Solving
Interprets complex geological and geophysical phenomena using technical reasoning to resolve subsurface uncertainties and contribute to studies and projects.
Cross-Disciplinary Geoscience Collaboration
Works closely with geologists and other scientists to reconcile geophysical results with geological formations and structures within multidisciplinary teams.
Geophysical Project Management
Designs project schedules, creates and monitors budgets, assesses deviations, and oversees subcontracted work to deliver surveys on time and to quality standards.
Independence & Professional Judgment
Exercises a mature sense of professional obligation to make sound technical decisions on largely unsupervised geophysical work.
Risk Mitigation in Survey Programs
Designs and manages surveys with deliberate attention to reducing technical and hazard risk while improving acquisition efficiency across complex projects.
Technical Mentoring & Training
Trains geophysicists in specialized acquisition and interpretation techniques and develops structured training programs to build team capability.
Client Relationship & Business Development
Manages relationships with a dedicated client base, engages in marketing and conferences, and provides technical input to proposals and tenders to generate revenue.
