What this role is

An experienced field and office technician who collects, processes, and verifies spatial data for oil and gas land and project planning. At the Senior Support Specialist (S3) level, the role owns escalated / complex cases, complex or non-standard cases, and drives resolution quality on the team's hardest cases. Guides junior support informally.

What this level does

  • Perform moderately difficult analytical tasks such as buffer-overlay analysis to surface patterns for urban planning, environmental impact and transportation datasets, deciding independently how to sequence the geoprocessing steps
  • Build and maintain project geodatabases with multiple inputs, resolving projection mismatches, topology errors and attribute conflicts using judgment rather than step-by-step instruction
  • Handle non-routine data requests end-to-end — sourcing supplementary resources like aerial photos, running the analysis and preparing the map output with little day-to-day supervision
  • Provide quality assurance on other technicians' mapping products, catching accuracy and metadata issues and coordinating rework
Knowledge applied
Detailed knowledge of geoprocessing and geodatabase procedures sufficient to perform non-routine analytical and data-integration tasks.
Complexity & problem solving
Exercises judgment on moderately difficult tasks like overlay analysis and resolving topology/projection conflicts.
Collaboration & interaction
Little instruction on daily work; coordinates some tasks and QA with peers; no people leadership.
Typical experience
2–4 years; skilled in geomatics data work.

Skills at this level

Spatial data collection and verification
Gathers and verifies spatial data from sources such as GNSS, satellite imagery and geological surveys, checking field values to ensure database integrity and accuracy.
Geospatial database management
Builds and maintains geodatabases with multiple inputs, reconciling GPS and remote-sensing sources and resolving attribute, projection and topology conflicts.
Geoprocessing and spatial analysis
Runs analytical techniques such as buffer-overlay analysis in ArcGIS or QGIS to identify patterns for urban planning, environmental impact and transportation datasets.
Cartographic production and QA
Produces maps, dashboards and report deliverables to style standards, and performs quality assurance by comparing outputs against source data to catch accuracy and metadata errors.
Geospatial scripting and automation
Writes Python or FME scripts to automate repetitive geoprocessing and data-cleaning steps within the team's mapping pipelines.
Remote-sensing data handling
Processes satellite imagery and aerial photography (e.g. in ERDAS Imagine) as supplementary sources for mapping and analysis tasks.
Project coordination and tracking
Coordinates the sequencing and delivery of mapping tasks and QA across a project, tracking progress against deadlines and priorities.
Technical communication
Explains data assessments, analytical results and recommendations in written reports and presentations to engineers, project managers and other GIS staff.
Procedure development and training
Establishes new data-handling and geoprocessing standards for the group and trains less experienced technicians in their application.
