What this role is
Senior individual-contributor geologist who leads technical interpretation and guides exploration or mine/reservoir geology work for a project or region. At the Principal Support Specialist (S5) level, the role owns function-wide support practice, program-level and systemic support problems, and drives support strategy across the function. Subject-matter authority; shapes the practice.
What this level does
- Develops and documents new sampling, sample-preparation and data-logging procedures and QC standards for the group, establishing how new instruments (e.g. new remote sensing or coring systems) are calibrated and used across projects
- Resolves the most complex field and lab problems — designing workarounds for uncharacterized ground, novel contaminants or non-standard specimens — and defines the technique when no established method fits
- Sets up and validates GIS/geological-modeling data pipelines and templates that other technicians work from, and audits map, cross-section and sample-log output for accuracy across multiple projects
- Acts as the technical working lead and reference point for the geological-support team, training technicians on equipment and procedures and advising project geologists on the feasibility and limits of proposed field/lab methods

- — Builds and edits geological models in packages such as Geosoft Oasis montaj and EarthVision, reconciling geophysical and geochemical datasets into coherent subsurface representations.
- Geophysical and Remote Sensing Instruments
- — Calibrates and operates ground-penetrating radar, remote sensing equipment and other survey instruments, and judges when re-runs or re-sampling are required for reliable data.
- Data Quality Control
- — Reviews sample logs, readings and map entries for missing, mislabeled or out-of-range values, reconciles discrepancies and corrects data before it reaches a geologist.
