What this role is

Expert individual contributor providing advanced geological analysis and technical judgment to guide major exploration, resource definition, and extraction decisions. At the Expert Professional (P5) level, the role owns multiple systems or a technical domain, establishes the approach, and drives org / multi-team outcomes. Leads cross-team technical initiatives.

What this level does

  • Own and dramatically improve a defined problem or method — e.g., a deposit-scale structural model or a resource-risking workflow — producing durable, confirmed geologic findings
  • Perform belt- to deposit-scale structural analysis and interpretation of mineralized systems, integrating field analysis, 3D modeling, and geophysical interpretation across the project lifecycle
  • Act independently on broad or unusual assignments spanning early exploration through development and operational support, serving as a senior technical reviewer for others' interpretations
  • Represent the geologic program externally to clients, joint-venture partners, and agencies, and supervise geologists on special interpretive tasks
Knowledge applied
Owns and dramatically improves a defined geologic problem or method; applies mastered belt-to-deposit interpretation to strategic exploration/geotechnical objectives.
Complexity & problem solving
Solves vexing applied problems through disciplined, repeated observation and integration of field, model, and geophysical data; high independence within accepted geologic frameworks.
Collaboration & interaction
Builds influential internal and external networks; acts as senior technical reviewer and program spokesperson to partners and agencies.
Typical experience
12+ years with extensive, demonstrated geologic expertise.

Skills at this level

Well log correlation
Correlates wireline and core log signatures between wells to construct stratigraphic frameworks and cross-sections that constrain prospect and development interpretations.
Prospect generation and resource risking
Generates individual exploration prospects and produces quantitative volumetric and chance-of-success estimates for presentation to and defense before resource review committees.
Subsurface and surface field investigation
Conducts surface and subsurface geological field investigations — mapping, core and sample logging, and observation — to acquire the primary data underpinning geologic interpretation.
Interpretative geologic reporting
Writes desk studies and interpretative reports that state geologic conclusions and their basis, going beyond the compilation of factual information to advise stakeholders.
3D geologic modeling and geophysical interpretation
Builds deposit-scale 3D geologic models and integrates geophysical interpretation across the exploration-to-development lifecycle to represent mineralized or subsurface systems.
Deposit- to belt-scale structural analysis
Analyzes the structural architecture of mineralized systems at belt to deposit scale, integrating field structural analysis with modeled and geophysical evidence.
GIS / GPS for geoscience
Uses geographic information systems and GPS to capture, georeference, map, and analyze spatial geological data supporting field and interpretive workflows.
Geotechnical and engineering geologic assessment
Performs engineering geologic assessments and foundation engineering studies, bearing named principal-in-charge accountability for the geologic basis of civil/geotechnical projects.
Expert witness and technical testimony
Provides expert witness services and high-level geologic testimony, defending interpretive conclusions and site assessments in a legal or regulatory setting.
Project delivery to budget and schedule
Manages geological project activities to meet deadline and budget requirements and presents data to stakeholders, clients, government agencies, and executive management.
Remote sensing for geology
Applies remote sensing imagery and derived products to identify geologic features and target areas ahead of and alongside ground investigation.
Geological laboratory techniques
Applies laboratory sample-preparation and analytical techniques used in geoscience to characterize rock, sediment, and core specimens.
Team guidance and mentorship
Provides guidance to junior geologists across the exploration and geotechnical spectrum and assists supervisors in preparing annual and long-term geological plans.
