What this role is
The top executive responsible for all geological strategy, resource evaluation, and exploration direction across the organization. At the Vice President (E3) level, the role owns a division, market and competitive strategy, and drives division-wide. Leads a division's leadership team.
What this level does
- Leads a large division or regional geology business through senior executives, shaping the corporate strategy for how the organization locates, characterizes, and reports on natural-resource deposits at enterprise scale.
- Owns enterprise-level technical risk — the exposure carried when the firm's resource estimates and geologic models underpin capital allocation, permitting, and public/market-facing statements.
- Represents the organization externally in industry, regulatory, and strategy forums, positioning its interpretation-and-modeling methodology and geological expertise as a market differentiator.
- Directs the interpretation-and-modeling capability across the full project lifecycle — from early field studies and laboratory analyses through belt-scale deposit interpretation — as a strategic asset rather than a project deliverable.
- Shapes the multi-year capability and investment agenda across technology, methodology, and senior talent that determines the division's competitive position in resource characterization.
- Knowledge applied
- Shapes corporate strategy for large geology divisions or regional businesses, treating interpretive and modeling capability across the full project lifecycle as a strategic asset.
- Complexity & problem solving
- Addresses enterprise-level risk and critical strategic impact — where the firm's resource estimates and geologic models drive capital allocation, permitting, and market-facing positions.
- Collaboration & interaction
- Represents the organization externally in industry, regulatory, and strategy forums and participates in setting corporate strategy for the division.
- Typical experience
- 15–20+ years with demonstrated enterprise-impact experience leading major strategic geology roles at division or regional scale.
Skills at this level
- Data interpretation and modeling
- — Moves from providing factual field/lab data to interpreting it — writing desk studies and interpretative reports and building geologic models — and, at the executive level, sets the standards that govern how models and resource conclusions are produced and defended.
- Fieldwork and field methods
- — Governs hands-on field techniques for sampling, surveys, and gathering rock/soil/groundwater data, setting the protocols and quality bar field crews execute against across projects.
- Analyzing Data or Information
- — Breaks down geological and geophysical information into separate parts to identify underlying principles, reasons, and facts that inform resource-size estimates and subsurface characterization.
- Technical writing and communication
- — Directs preparation of technical reports, papers, and presentations and ensures findings are communicated credibly to both scientists and nonscientist decision-makers, clients, and boards.
- Science
- — Uses scientific rules and strategies to solve geological problems and to validate the interpretive methods the organization stakes its resource conclusions on.
- Critical thinking
- — Reaches conclusions from testing results and data collation, and weighs geologic uncertainty against commercial and schedule consequence when setting functional strategy.
- 3D geologic modeling (GSI3D / SubsurfaceViewer MX)
- — Uses 3D geologic modeling platforms to build and defend subsurface and deposit models, and sets these as the shared interpretive standard across divisions.
- Drillhole and well-log visualization (gINT, OpenLog, QGeoloGIS)
- — Uses drillhole/well-log data management and visualization tools to structure borehole evidence into defensible geologic interpretations feeding resource estimates.
- GIS-based interpretation (ArcGIS, Surfer)
- — Uses GIS and gridding/contouring tools to map and interpret spatial geological data for deposit location and size estimation.
- Aquifer-test analysis (AQTESOLV)
- — Uses aquifer-test analysis software to characterize groundwater/hydrogeologic properties as an input to subsurface interpretation and project decisions.
- HSE and HAZWOPER field-safety governance
- — Sets and enforces OSHA 40-Hour HAZWOPER, CPR/First Aid, and field-safety expectations as a condition of conducting compliant sampling and data-collection fieldwork.
- Getting Information
- — Observes, receives, and otherwise obtains geological information from field observations, aerial photographs, samples, laboratory analyses, and all relevant data sources.
