What this role is
Senior individual-contributor authority who solves the mine's most complex extraction, processing, and ventilation challenges and sets technical direction for operating practices. At the Principal Professional (P6) level, the role owns organization-wide architecture and the hardest problems, strategic, open-ended problems shaping the technical future, and drives organization-wide. Recognized authority; multiplies many teams.
What this level does
- Bridge the gap between strategic planning and day-to-day implementation across the whole mining operation, aligning execution with the life-of-mine plan
- Oversee entire mining operations — managing budgets, regulatory compliance and the full production, safety and cost envelope
- Direct the overall management of mining projects including staffing, project plans, goals/deadlines and performance evaluation of the leadership team
- Define operating models and standards that others in the operation adopt, redesigning execution methods where existing approaches no longer improve safety or cost outcomes
- Serve as the recognised operational authority for the site, shaping how commercial and digital systems (e.g. ROC-based operations) reconfigure mining execution and risk
- Knowledge applied
- Applies field-defining operational mastery, translating life-of-mine strategy into disciplined day-to-day execution and redesigning operating methods for the site.
- Complexity & problem solving
- Solves organisation-wide problems with full independence — owning budgets, compliance and the whole production/safety/cost envelope, and devising new execution approaches when old ones plateau.
- Collaboration & interaction
- Influences the entire site operation and its leadership team; recognised operational authority engaging executive search and cross-functional peers.
- Typical experience
- 15+ yrs; principal operations authority, often reached via superintendent → Mine Operations Principal → Mine Manager path.
Skills at this level
- Operations monitoring
- — Watches gauges, dials and other indicators on mining machines and conveyors to confirm equipment is running properly and to catch abnormal readings before they cause failures at the face.
- Operation and control
- — Controls the operation of continuous mining machines, power shovels, shuttle/mine cars, conveyors and hoisting engines to extract and move material safely to grade.
- Ventilation control
- — Hangs and maintains ventilation tubing and curtains to keep the advancing mining-face area properly ventilated as extraction progresses.
- Ground and face condition assessment
- — Assesses ground, roof and face conditions encountered during mining, sets hydraulic roof supports, and takes appropriate action as conditions change to keep the section safe.
- Grade and mining-plan execution
- — Follows mining plans and grade requirements while cutting and clearing material, adjusting operation to hold grade and sequence within the plan.
- Shift and crew supervision
- — Leads day-to-day mining activity for a crew, section or area — directing the workforce, sequencing equipment utilisation and combining on-site supervision with administrative duties.
- Production and safety-gap diagnosis
- — Diagnoses the root cause of production and safety-performance shortfalls across a mining area and creates actionable corrective plans with crews and maintenance.
- Cross-discipline operations integration
- — Coordinates and integrates execution across Mining, Drill & Blast, Planning and Maintenance so the operation runs safely, efficiently and to schedule.
- Commercial and data literacy
- — Interprets operational and equipment data — including Remote Operations Center outputs — to improve commercial outcomes and understand how digital and process choices affect mining margin and risk.
- Mine budget and compliance oversight
- — Manages mining operation budgets and ensures regulatory and safety compliance across the full production, cost and workforce envelope.
- Contractor and superintendent leadership
- — Leads Mining Superintendents and contractor teams, setting operating standards and holding them accountable for production, safety and cost commitments.
