What this role is
Produces detailed technical drawings and drafting packages that translate engineering designs into buildable specifications for energy and mining projects. At the Mid-Level Professional (P3) level, the role owns features or a sub-system end-to-end, adapts existing approaches, and drives project / team outcomes. Mentors juniors informally.
What this level does
- Independently develop and implement mine planning, engineering and related systems and standards, ensuring short-range plans achieve long-range and business objectives
- Own pit optimization, development and operations scheduling and ore-blending strategy for an assigned pit, bench or project area, planning own work day-to-day
- Perform economic analysis and write mine technical report sections at pre-feasibility level, evaluating identifiable trade-offs (strip ratio, cut-off grade, sequencing)
- Coordinate project activities with geology, survey and operations staff, and network with senior professionals to resolve interfacing issues
- Present designs and preliminary findings to project leads and internal stakeholders, defending assumptions and methods
- Knowledge applied
- Applies diverse mine-engineering knowledge independently across pit optimization, scheduling and economic analysis at pre-feasibility level.
- Complexity & problem solving
- Evaluates identifiable factors (strip ratio, cut-off grade, sequencing trade-offs) with day-to-day independence and milestone review.
- Collaboration & interaction
- Networks with senior professionals across geology, survey and operations; may coordinate project activities and present internally.
- Typical experience
- 5+ years (BA), 3 years (MA); PE license often gates progression at/above this level.
Skills at this level
- Pit Optimization
- — Runs and interprets open-pit optimization to define ultimate pit shells and phased pushbacks from block models, balancing strip ratio, cut-off grade and revenue against mining cost to maximize project value.
- Ore Blending
- — Plans the sequence and proportions in which ore of varying grades and characteristics is mined and combined to meet mill feed specifications and consistent product quality targets over the schedule.
- Mine Scheduling
- — Develops development and operations schedules that translate the long-range mine plan into achievable short-range production sequences, ensuring bench/level advance, equipment and grade targets are met.
- Mine Technical Reporting
- — Writes and compiles pre-feasibility and feasibility mine technical reports, documenting resource inputs, design assumptions, schedules and conclusions to a standard that supports investment and client decision-making.
- Mine Economic Analysis
- — Evaluates the economics of mine designs and sequencing — capital and operating cost, cut-off grade, NPV and cash-flow trade-offs — to justify plan selection and support decision-making.
- Mine Planning Systems & Standards
- — Develops and implements mine planning, engineering and related systems and standards, ensuring short-range plans align with and achieve long-range and business objectives.
- Mine Modeling & Optimization Software
- — Builds block models and runs optimization and scheduling scenarios in Whittle, Vulcan and Deswik to test design alternatives; proficiency deepens with seniority and larger, riskier ore bodies.
- Mine Layout Drafting
- — Produces and revises mine layouts, cross-sections and infrastructure drawings in AutoCAD to design standards, translating engineering intent into buildable, dimensioned representations.
- Geological Data Analysis
- — Interprets drillhole, assay and survey data to characterize the ore body and inform grade estimation, design boundaries and mining constraints.
- Mine Safety & Environmental Compliance
- — Checks that mine designs and active workings conform to safety and environmental regulations, identifying and mitigating hazards such as slope instability and ground-control risk.
- Geotechnical & Ground-Control Judgment
- — Predicts slope stability, ground behavior and factors of safety through calculation to ensure life-critical mine structures are designed right before construction, treating field tests as the ultimate authority under doubt.
- Mine Failure Analysis
- — Conducts forensic investigation of mine failures and chronic underperformance — slope failures, dilution, schedule collapse — to isolate the root cause behind the apparent cause and prevent recurrence across the operation.
- Client Technical Advisory
- — Advises mining clients and their management on mine strategy, design conclusions and project terms, presenting and defending technical findings in feasibility and stakeholder reviews.
- Technical Mentorship & Standards Leadership
- — Sets technical standards, reviews others' plans and designs, and develops junior and senior engineers' capability in mine planning, ventilation or production-optimization specializations.
