What this role is
Senior individual-contributor engineer who provides expert technical leadership on drilling program design, well planning, and rig equipment integrity across a portfolio of active drilling projects. At the Principal Support Specialist (S5) level, the role owns function-wide support practice, program-level and systemic support problems, and drives support strategy across the function. Subject-matter authority; shapes the practice.
What this level does
- Create and document new data-capture, reporting and cost-tracking procedures for the drilling support group, standardizing how WellView records and daily reports are built across all rigs
- Serve as the drilling-operations support specialist and working lead, setting the methods peers follow for regulatory submissions, materials logistics and expenditure reconciliation
- Design the framework for tracking daily costs against expenditure proposals across a full drilling program, defining variance thresholds and escalation rules
- Develop the lessons-learned and end-of-well data compilation methodology so results are consistently captured and reusable across future wells
- Advise engineers and less-experienced support staff on complex data, cost or contractual record issues, resolving the cases others cannot
- Knowledge applied
- Highly skilled in drilling-operations support; contributes to the creation of new data-capture, reporting and cost-tracking procedures and standards.
- Complexity & problem solving
- Resolves complex records, cost and contractual issues and develops the techniques others use across a full drilling program.
- Collaboration & interaction
- Acts as working lead and facilitator; provides guidance to and influences engineers and peers on support methods and problem cases.
- Typical experience
- 6+ yrs; expert in the drilling-operations support specialty.
Skills at this level
- Drilling Data Capture and Logging
- — Records operational parameters, drill logs and rock-sample details into standard well data sheets and the Pason WellView field system, keeping entries current as rig operations proceed through the day.
- Daily Drilling Report Preparation
- — Compiles per-well daily reports covering drilling progress, parameters, materials consumed and costs, reconciling figures from field tickets and multiple sources before submission.
- Cost and AFE Tracking
- — Enters and tracks daily drilling costs against expenditure proposals (AFEs), tracing variances back to service-company invoices and field tickets to explain discrepancies.
- Regulatory Submission Processing
- — Prepares and submits drilling regulatory paperwork and end-of-well data packages, determining which records apply and routing items needing engineer sign-off.
- Drilling Materials Procurement Coordination
- — Coordinates ordering, delivery timing and receipt verification of drilling materials and contracted services so the well program is supplied on schedule, resolving vendor and delivery discrepancies.
- Service Proposal Evaluation Support
- — Reviews service-company proposals and quotes against standard rate sheets and prior jobs, summarizing options and cost implications for the engineering team.
- Drilling Data Reconciliation
- — Investigates inconsistencies between field data, contractor records and cost systems, deciding how to accurately represent the operation when sources disagree.
- Pason WellView Administration
- — Maintains and structures records in the Pason WellView field solution, adapting the setup for non-standard rig data feeds and validating incomplete entries for audits and reviews.
- Rig Safety and Environmental Record-Keeping
- — Applies prescribed rig-site safety and environmental logging procedures when handling and documenting samples, consumables and operational events.
- Drilling Support Procedure Development
- — Creates and documents standardized data-capture, reporting and cost-tracking procedures for the drilling support group and guides peers in applying them.
