What this role is

Executive leader overseeing all control room, remote monitoring, and field coordination operations across energy and mining sites. At the Senior Director (Executive) (E2) level, the role owns multiple functions or a major area, multi-function strategy and risk, and drives major-area outcomes. Leads function leaders.

What this level does

  • Lead multiple operations functions or divisions through VPs — combining control operations with asset performance, maintenance coordination and dispatch scheduling under a single accountable executive
  • Make cross-functional decisions with company-viability consequences, such as fleet-wide standardization of SCADA/DCS platforms and outage-management protocols across geographically dispersed generation and storage sites
  • Negotiate critical grid and market matters with transmission system operators, ISOs and balancing authorities where curtailment, interconnection or compliance exposure affects material revenue
  • Own the operating strategy that maximizes fleet output while minimizing downtime across a significant business unit, setting the performance metrics control room directors are held to
  • Direct enterprise-wide emergency and NERC-compliance governance, ensuring consistent standard emergency response roles across all controlled facilities
Knowledge applied
Applies cross-functional knowledge spanning control operations, maintenance coordination and dispatch, standardizing platforms and protocols across multiple sites.
Complexity & problem solving
Solves abstract, high-consequence issues where decisions may impact company viability, such as fleet-wide SCADA standardization or curtailment exposure across ISOs.
Collaboration & interaction
Negotiates critical grid and market matters with top ISO/TSO and balancing-authority leaders; leads multiple functions or divisions through VPs.
Typical experience
15+ years with strategic leadership of operations functions or significant generation-and-storage business units.

Outage coordination and revenue mitigation
Identifies and resolves real-time and forced outages by coordinating with transmission system operators, scheduling coordinators and balancing authorities while mitigating lost revenue.
Emergency response leadership
Directs readiness and execution of emergency shutdown, blow-down, fire and gas detection systems and standard emergency response roles across controlled facilities.
Fleet performance optimization
Monitors plant performance metrics and sets strategies to maximize fleet output while minimizing downtime across day-to-day operations.
Operational P&L and cost control
Owns P&L and cost control across multiple generation-and-storage locations, driving procurement, contracting and process optimization decisions.
Capital and operating recommendations
Evaluates and recommends system improvements spanning capital and operating investments, cost control and process optimization for control-room infrastructure.
External regulatory and industry representation
Represents the enterprise to regulators, ISOs, balancing authorities and industry bodies on grid reliability, market design and interconnection strategy.
High-pressure decision-making
Applies strong analytical judgment to make quick, sound decisions during equipment or control problems and operational emergencies in the control room.
