What this role is
Entry-level support technician who assists manufacturing and production engineers with routine tasks on the shop floor. At the Support Associate (S1) level, the role owns a single task type or queue, routine, well-defined requests, and drives individual transactions. None.
What this level does
- Follows detailed work instructions and process routings to complete prescribed setup, staging, and material-handling tasks on a single production line or process step under close supervision.
- Records production counts, cycle times, and basic quality readings into the MRP/production-scheduling system using the fields and steps shown in the standard operating procedure.
- Performs routine equipment checks (e.g., verifying CNC/PLC machine states against the setup sheet) and escalates anything not matching the instruction to a senior technician or engineer.
- Retrieves parts, fixtures, and tooling per the pick list and confirms quantities against the materials requirement planning (MRP) system.
- Files and updates process documentation and CAD-derived work instructions in the designated location as directed.
- Knowledge applied
- General procedural knowledge of a single production line or process step; applies detailed work instructions, setup sheets, and standard data-entry steps as given.
- Complexity & problem solving
- Routine, prescribed tasks where the answer is readily available in the procedure; refers anything unusual to a senior technician or engineer.
- Collaboration & interaction
- Completes own assigned tasks with standard interactions; reports readings and status to the line lead or engineer.
- Typical experience
- 0–1 years; minimal experience in a production environment.
Skills at this level
- Lean Manufacturing
- — Identifies and reduces waste within a production line or process — capturing cycle-time, downtime, and scrap data and applying it to eliminate non-value steps without compromising throughput.
- Process Routing & Work Instruction Execution
- — Reads, follows, and (at senior levels) adapts detailed process routings, setup sheets, and standard operating procedures to run production steps correctly and repeatably.
- CNC Machine Setup & Program Handling
- — Sets up computer numerical control (CNC) equipment, loads and edits approved programs, and verifies the run against the setup sheet before releasing to production.
- PLC & SCADA Monitoring
- — Monitors programmable logic controller (PLC) states and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) displays, interpreting alarm conditions to isolate whether a fault is program, tooling, material, or fixture related.
- MRP & Production Scheduling Data Entry
- — Logs and reconciles production counts, scrap, and inventory in materials requirement planning (MRP) and production-scheduling software, investigating and correcting discrepancies between logged data and routings.
- In-Process Quality Inspection
- — Performs first-piece and in-process checks against control plans, records measurements, routes out-of-tolerance parts, and documents deviations for engineering review.
- Fixture & Gauge Building
- — Builds and validates fixtures, gauges, and check aids from engineering and CAD specifications, documenting deviations and feeding them back to the process engineer.
- Line Troubleshooting
- — Diagnoses recurring line stoppages and equipment faults, choosing among established recovery procedures and, at higher levels, developing repeatable techniques for intermittent multi-cause problems.
- Time Study & Data Collection
- — Captures cycle-time, downtime, and waste observations on the line and consolidates them into throughput, yield, and process-capability data for engineers.
- New Product Introduction Support
- — Sequences setup, data collection, and process-capability checks for pilot and trial runs, consolidating results so engineers can validate a new part or process.
- Mathematics
- — Applies measurement, tolerance, and yield calculations to interpret gauge readings, cycle-time data, and scrap rates in production support.
- Communication
- — Reports line status, readings, and deviations clearly in writing and verbally, and prepares standard production and quality reports for the engineering team.
- Procedure Development & Standard Work Creation
- — Documents new setup, changeover, and inspection procedures and standard work within a specialty area so they can be adopted consistently across shifts.
- Technical Guidance & Training
- — Provides hands-on guidance and training to less experienced technicians on equipment, software workflows, and procedural knowledge, acting as a working lead without formal supervisory authority.
