What this role is
Serves as the top technical individual contributor for upstream bioprocessing operations, driving process optimization and troubleshooting across manufacturing campaigns. At the Expert Professional (P5) level, the role owns multiple systems or a technical domain, establishes the approach, and drives org / multi-team outcomes. Leads cross-team technical initiatives.
What this level does
- Determine standards, budgets, production goals, and rates for the upstream operation based on company policies, equipment and labor availability, and workloads.
- Make high-consequence decisions carrying budget, safety, and throughput consequences across the plant, acting independently on broad assignments.
- Advise others on ways to improve processes or products and determine production methods for the raw-material conversion area.
- Confer with peer supervisors and functional leaders across operations, maintenance, quality, and supply to coordinate activities and resolve issues affecting the processing line.
- Drive iterative improvement of the established processing tradition — reducing waste, increasing yield — through tested, proven changes others adopt with confidence.
- Knowledge applied
- Applies expert command of processing capability and cost to own budgets, standards, and improvement of the established tradition.
- Complexity & problem solving
- Works on strategic, plant-level issues with high independence, balancing intangibles of budget, safety, and throughput.
- Collaboration & interaction
- Builds influential relationships across functions; acts as the processing operation's senior point of coordination.
- Typical experience
- 12+ yrs, extensive processing and supervisory expertise.
Skills at this level
- Production and Processing
- — Applies knowledge of raw materials, conversion processes, quality control, and costs to run and improve the early-stage manufacture of goods; the raw-materials behavior component is load-bearing for upstream processing supervision.
- Administration and Management
- — Uses business and management principles — resource allocation, staffing models, production methods, and coordination of people and equipment — to set standards, budgets, and goals for the processing area.
- Communication and Directing People
- — Guides, directs, and motivates operators by setting performance standards and monitoring performance, and coaches and develops crew members by identifying developmental needs on the line.
- Making Decisions and Solving Problems
- — Analyzes information from gauges, records, and observations to choose the best course when defects or throughput losses arise; judgment under ambiguity grows with the consequence of the decision.
- Mechanical Knowledge
- — Applies knowledge of the machines and tools used in the conversion process — their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance — to inspect equipment and identify causes of errors or defects.
- Manufacturing ERP Recordkeeping (SAP / Oracle JD Edwards EnterpriseOne / Epicor Vantage / Enterprise 21)
- — Uses manufacturing ERP systems to enter and retrieve work orders, production schedules, and efficiency/accuracy records, and to evaluate current output against production estimates for the processing area.
- Quality Data Tracking (Microsoft Access / Total Quality Control Management)
- — Maintains and queries defect, efficiency, and quality-control records in database and TQM tools to keep records on accuracy and surface recurring defects on the raw-material conversion steps.
