What this role is
An individual contributor who operates upstream manufacturing equipment and processes to produce bulk product under established procedures. At the Developing Professional (P2) level, the role owns defined deliverables / small features, applies established patterns, and drives own and immediate-team deliverables. May guide interns.
What this level does
- Run a defined upstream unit or shift with routine independence, planning schedules to reach production goals against targets provided by leadership.
- Inspect equipment, structures, and materials to identify the cause of errors or defects in the early-stage process, and monitor incoming raw-material events to detect problems.
- Conduct employee training in equipment operations and safety procedures, or assign that training to experienced operators.
- Keep records on efficiency and accuracy and read charts, work orders, and production schedules to evaluate current output against estimates, entering and retrieving data through the plant ERP.
- Implement conventional fixes to improve motivation, methods, or efficiency when familiar problems arise on the line.
- Knowledge applied
- Applies working knowledge of production and processing techniques and equipment operation to run a defined unit and train operators.
- Complexity & problem solving
- Exercises judgment in familiar contexts, diagnosing conventional defects and applying known fixes to methods and efficiency.
- Collaboration & interaction
- Builds productive relationships with the crew and management; may mentor junior operators and lead-hands.
- Typical experience
- 2+ yrs supervising a line, or equivalent operator experience with defined procedures.
Skills at this level
- Production and Processing
- — Applies knowledge of raw materials, conversion processes, quality control, and costs to run and improve the early-stage manufacture of goods; the raw-materials behavior component is load-bearing for upstream processing supervision.
- Administration and Management
- — Uses business and management principles — resource allocation, staffing models, production methods, and coordination of people and equipment — to set standards, budgets, and goals for the processing area.
- Communication and Directing People
- — Guides, directs, and motivates operators by setting performance standards and monitoring performance, and coaches and develops crew members by identifying developmental needs on the line.
- Making Decisions and Solving Problems
- — Analyzes information from gauges, records, and observations to choose the best course when defects or throughput losses arise; judgment under ambiguity grows with the consequence of the decision.
- Mechanical Knowledge
- — Applies knowledge of the machines and tools used in the conversion process — their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance — to inspect equipment and identify causes of errors or defects.
- Manufacturing ERP Recordkeeping (SAP / Oracle JD Edwards EnterpriseOne / Epicor Vantage / Enterprise 21)
- — Uses manufacturing ERP systems to enter and retrieve work orders, production schedules, and efficiency/accuracy records, and to evaluate current output against production estimates for the processing area.
- Quality Data Tracking (Microsoft Access / Total Quality Control Management)
- — Maintains and queries defect, efficiency, and quality-control records in database and TQM tools to keep records on accuracy and surface recurring defects on the raw-material conversion steps.
