At the Senior Support Specialist (S3) level, the role owns escalated / complex cases, complex or non-standard cases, and drives resolution quality on the team's hardest cases. Guides junior support informally.
What this level does
- Perform calibration and qualification of research and manufacturing equipment, executing qualification protocols (IQ/OQ/PQ) and supporting validation activities
- Substitute reference standards and select appropriate methods to complete non-routine calibrations where the standard procedure does not directly apply
- Review calibration SOPs for accuracy during routine calibration and when a new instrument is introduced, flagging discrepancies
- Ensure calibration work meets regulatory requirements under FDA 21 CFR Part 820 and ISO 13485, maintaining traceability to national standards
- Coordinate calibration schedules and priorities for assigned equipment and resolve moderately difficult measurement problems using judgment
- Knowledge applied
- Detailed procedural knowledge sufficient to perform non-routine calibrations and qualification protocols and to review SOPs for accuracy.
- Complexity & problem solving
- Makes judgments on moderately difficult tasks, substitutes standards and selects methods where the standard procedure doesn't directly fit.
- Collaboration & interaction

Skills at this level
- Precision Calibration Execution
- — Calibrates instruments and equipment against traceable reference standards per written procedures, adjusting devices to bring measurements within specified tolerance.
- Metrology Fundamentals
- — Applies measurement principles — units, traceability, tolerance and measurement uncertainty — to determine whether an instrument reads correctly and how to correct it.
- Instrument Troubleshooting and Adjustment
- — Diagnoses out-of-tolerance and inaccurate readings, then repairs, adjusts or substitutes standards to restore instruments to specification.
- Equipment Qualification and Validation
- — Executes IQ/OQ/PQ qualification protocols for research and manufacturing equipment and supports validation activities to confirm fitness for use.
- Calibration Records and Certificate Management
- — Maintains calibration data and equipment history logs in the company database and produces accurate calibration reports and certificates.
- Regulatory and Quality Standards Compliance
- — Performs and documents calibration work to meet FDA 21 CFR Part 820, ISO 13485 and ISO/IEC 17025 requirements, ensuring traceability and good laboratory practices.
- Calibration SOP Development
- — Reviews, updates and creates calibration standard operating procedures to reflect new instruments, tolerances and measurement methods.
- Standard Substitution and Method Adaptation
- — Selects and substitutes reference standards and adapts calibration methods to complete non-routine or unprecedented calibrations where no procedure exists.
- Audit Support and Readiness
- — Prepares calibration documentation and records for internal and regulatory/accreditation audits and evaluates calibration methodologies for compliance.
- Measurement Documentation Discipline
- — Captures and records readings, adjustments and pass/fail results with the accuracy and organization required to defend calibration decisions later.
- Working-Lead Technical Guidance
- — Guides, checks and trains less experienced calibration technicians and coordinates calibration project and schedule execution across the team.
