What this role is

Executive who owns the enterprise-wide calibration and measurement-integrity strategy across all manufacturing sites. At the Senior Director (Executive) (E2) level, the role owns multiple functions or a major area, multi-function strategy and risk, and drives major-area outcomes. Leads function leaders.

What this level does

  • Lead calibration and instrumentation across multiple sites or a significant business unit through site-level function heads (E1s) and their teams, harmonizing calibration programs, procedures, and measurement-standard policy across locations.
  • Make decisions with cross-plant consequence — standardizing metrology practices, corrective-action frameworks, and preventive-maintenance strategy where inconsistency between sites could jeopardize product quality or regulatory standing.
  • Negotiate critical calibration-capability matters (capital for standards labs, ISA-certified staffing, third-party accreditation) with operations and quality leadership across the business.
  • Establish the multi-site metrology talent pipeline — coaching pathways from technician through calibration specialist and instrumentation engineer — and set the competency bar for supervisory and QA calibration roles.
  • Own aggregate calibration-compliance and equipment-lifecycle risk for the business unit, resolving abstract, high-consequence issues where measurement uncertainty affects manufacturing viability.
Knowledge applied
Applies cross-plant metrology knowledge to standardize calibration programs, measurement-standard policy, and preventive-maintenance strategy across multiple sites or a significant business unit.
Complexity & problem solving
Cross-functional, abstract issues with high consequence: harmonizes inconsistent site practices where measurement uncertainty could affect manufacturing viability across locations.
Collaboration & interaction
Negotiates critical calibration-capability and accreditation matters with top operations and quality leaders; leads site function heads (E1s).
Typical experience
15+ years, including strategic leadership of the calibration/metrology function across units.

Skills at this level

Measurement science / metrology governance
Applies measurement science, mathematics, physics, chemistry, and electronics to set and defend the standards by which an organization's calibration accuracy and traceability are judged.
Measurement-standard suitability determination
Determines whether a given measurement standard is fit to calibrate a class of devices, and sets policy for corrective actions when calibration problems are identified.
Calibration program strategy
Designs and governs the programs and procedures that control calibration for a facility, business unit, or enterprise, rather than executing individual instrument calibrations.
Calibration procedure development
Directs creation of new calibration procedures and methodologies that ensure accurate, consistent results and preserve the integrity of the calibration process across instrument types.
Equipment-lifecycle preventive maintenance strategy
Sets strategy for calibration and preventive maintenance across the full equipment lifecycle, from installation and startup through decommissioning.
Calibration compliance & audit representation
Represents calibration compliance and measurement-integrity posture to regulators, accreditation bodies, and audits, managing the enterprise risk of lapsed traceability or certification.
Metrology talent & competency development
Builds the calibration talent pipeline from technician through specialist and instrumentation engineer, including ISA-certification pathways into supervisory, QA, and metrology-management roles.
Calibration performance metrics leadership
Defines and presents calibration performance metrics and improvement initiatives to senior management, converting instrument-uptime and compliance data into functional and business decisions.
Analytical judgment on measurement data
Interprets raw calibration and test data accurately to judge instrument accuracy and to set corrective-action and process-improvement direction.
