What this role is

An individual contributor who assists in developing mine plans and ore extraction schedules under the guidance of senior engineers. At the Support Specialist (S2) level, the role owns a defined queue or customer set, standard issues within known procedures, and drives customer satisfaction for own queue. None.

What this level does

  • Carry out multi-step surveying and CAD tasks — plotting ventilation, drainage, lighting and hoisting/power-supply layouts — following established drafting standards, with instructions only on unfamiliar drawing types
  • Assemble monthly production tracking reports by pulling data from established sources and populating the standard report format for engineering staff
  • Prepare draft instructions and technical device/parts specifications for other workers from a mining engineer's outline
  • Route mine engineering and reclamation permit packages through the documentation/evaluation workflow, checking each for required attachments before submission
Knowledge applied
Broad knowledge of mine drafting standards and documentation procedures; carries out varied multi-step survey, CAD and report-assembly tasks.
Complexity & problem solving
Recognizes when a task calls for occasional deviation and seeks direction; follows procedures on new drawing or permit types.
Collaboration & interaction
Routine interaction with engineering peers to obtain outlines, data sources and markups; delivers to stated deadlines and priorities.
Typical experience
1–2 yrs; some related mine-support experience.

Skills at this level

Mine CAD Drafting
Produces and maintains CAD drawings of mine layouts, workings, ventilation, drainage, lighting, hoisting and power-supply systems from engineers' redlines and specifications.
Mine Surveying Support
Records and reduces field survey readings into layout drawings and records, resolving discrepancies between measured data and existing mine models.
Permit and Reclamation Documentation
Assembles, files and routes mine engineering and reclamation permit packages through documentation, evaluation and approval workflows, checking completeness and non-routine agency requirements.
Production Data Tracking
Logs and reconciles daily/monthly mine production figures, investigating deviations from expected production rates and estimated reclamation costs.
Technical Report and Instruction Preparation
Prepares reports, work instructions and technical device/parts specifications for other workers from engineers' outlines, using standard templates.
Detail Orientation
Ensures drafting, survey records and instructions are accurate given the safety stakes of mine operations, catching missing or inconsistent items before submission.
Procedure Adaptation and Standardization
Adapts drafting, survey and tracking methods for unprecedented mine situations and creates standardized procedures and templates for the support group.
Work Sequencing and Coordination
Organizes drafting, survey and reporting tasks into a coherent sequence so a planning or reporting package is delivered to deadline without daily instruction.
Technician Guidance
Reviews junior technicians' CAD and documentation output and informally guides their technique as a working lead on the support team.
