What this role is
Executive leader accountable for facilities engineering, equipment maintenance, and metrology programs across the organization's manufacturing and production sites. At the Director (Executive) (E1) level, the role owns a significant function with strategic authority, strategic and cross-functional, and drives function-wide enterprise impact. Executive leadership of a function.
What this level does
- Leads the complete facilities and maintenance engineering sub-function through maintenance and reliability Directors (M5s), setting the technical standards for equipment maintenance, modification, and machine replacement across the production estate.
- Owns the coordination and approval of procedures for facility and equipment maintenance or modification, including capital decisions on replacement of machines whose failure carries serious functional and production-continuity consequences.
- Translates the plant's operational strategy into a maintenance and reliability functional strategy, applying detailed company knowledge of production processes, quality control, and cost structures to protect uptime.
- Interfaces with peer manufacturing and operations executives and with major equipment vendors/customers, reconciling maintenance windows, capital timing, and production schedules.
- Directs design-review governance and process-improvement initiatives for maintenance engineering, ensuring integrated systems for equipment lifecycle, material flow, and inventory of spares are sustained.
- Knowledge applied
- Applies detailed company knowledge of production processes, machines, tools, and maintenance techniques to set functional strategy for the facilities and maintenance sub-function; knows the equipment estate and its cost and quality-control implications intimately.
- Complexity & problem solving
- Solves functional-strategy problems — prioritizing preventive versus corrective maintenance, timing machine replacement — where a wrong call carries serious functional and production-continuity consequences.
- Collaboration & interaction
- Leads the sub-function through Directors (M5s); interfaces with other executives and major equipment vendors/customers to align maintenance windows with production demand.
- Typical experience
- 12–15+ years of combined engineering and management experience, including running maintenance/reliability engineering teams.
Skills at this level
- Facility and Equipment Maintenance Strategy
- — Coordinates and approves procedures for maintaining or modifying production facilities and equipment, including deciding when machines are repaired versus replaced, to sustain uptime across the estate.
- Mechanical Knowledge
- — Applies knowledge of machines and tools — their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance — to govern the technical standards for the plant's equipment and machinery.
- Systems Design and Integration
- — Directs the design, testing, and evaluation of integrated systems for managing industrial production and maintenance, spanning human work factors, quality control, inventory of spares, logistics, material flow, cost analysis, and production coordination.
- Production and Processing
- — Draws on knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, and costs to align maintenance and reliability decisions with the effective manufacture and distribution of goods.
- Management of Material Resources
- — Obtains and directs the appropriate use of equipment, facilities, and spare-parts materials across the maintenance and facilities engineering estate.
- Engineering and Technology
- — Applies engineering science and technology principles, techniques, and equipment to the maintenance, modification, and lifecycle management of production goods and facilities.
- Making Decisions and Solving Problems
- — Analyzes production and reliability information and evaluates results to choose the best course on maintenance timing, capital reinvestment, and equipment replacement.
- Corrective Action Preventive Action (CAPA)
- — Finds the root cause of recurring equipment and facility failures and develops solutions, then embeds them across the organization to prevent the problem from reoccurring.
- Negotiation
- — Brings equipment vendors, operations peers, and top leaders together and reconciles differences over maintenance windows, capital timing, and multi-year service and replacement contracts.
- Social Perceptiveness
- — Reads the reactions of executive peers, boards, and engineering teams and understands why they react as they do, to lead the maintenance and facilities function through others.
- Design
- — Applies design techniques, tools, and principles to review and approve precision technical plans, blueprints, and models for equipment modification and facility infrastructure.
