What this role is

An advanced individual contributor who diagnoses complex equipment failures and drives reliability improvements across production systems. At the Lead Support Specialist (S4) level, the role owns team process and quality, cross-case patterns and process gaps, and drives team-level quality and efficiency. Mentors and coordinates the support team.

What this level does

  • Adapts maintenance and repair methods to handle unprecedented or intermittent equipment failures not covered by existing procedures, resourcefully determining a diagnostic approach
  • Provides technical support and guidance to junior technicians on complex breakdowns and acts as a working lead on multi-technician repair jobs
  • Collaborates with production and engineering teams to recommend equipment modifications and preventive-maintenance frequency changes that improve machinery performance and uptime
  • Interprets equipment data and failure patterns to anticipate breakdowns and adjust maintenance plans before failures occur
  • Resolves conflicts between competing repair priorities across lines, balancing urgency, safety, and production impact
Knowledge applied
Extensive knowledge of equipment and maintenance administration, enough to adapt methods for unprecedented failures.
Complexity & problem solving
Understands implications of failure patterns, recommends new solutions and modifications, and determines methods for new assignments.
Collaboration & interaction
Informally guides junior technicians and acts as a working lead; partners with production and engineering.
Typical experience
4–6 years; advanced maintenance experience.

Skills at this level

Preventive Maintenance Execution
Performs scheduled upkeep of industrial equipment — lubrication, part replacement, cleaning, and inspection — following maintenance schedules to prevent unplanned breakdowns.
Breakdown Diagnosis and Repair
Diagnoses equipment breakdowns and troubleshoots faults, using the ability to read and interpret technical diagrams and schematics to isolate root causes and restore machinery to service.
Machine Calibration
Calibrates industrial machines against reference standards, verifies measurements are within tolerance, and adjusts or escalates when readings drift outside acceptable limits.
Spare Parts Management
Handles spare-parts inventory for maintenance — picking against work orders, tracking stock levels and reorder points, and flagging shortages that could delay repairs.
Industrial Safety and Compliance
Applies industrial safety standards and OSHA regulations, including lockout/tagout, when working on or near powered production equipment.
Maintenance Documentation
Records PM tasks, meter readings, corrective actions, and abnormalities into work-order systems and maintenance logs to build equipment history.
Predictive Maintenance and Equipment Data Analysis
Analyzes datasets from IoT-instrumented equipment, applying data-driven and machine-learning approaches to anticipate failures and schedule maintenance before breakdowns occur.
Maintenance Procedure Development
Creates and revises preventive/predictive maintenance procedures, calibration methods, and checklists for the equipment fleet as machinery and operating conditions change.
Cross-Functional Equipment Collaboration
Works with production and engineering teams to optimize machinery performance, recommend equipment modifications, and align maintenance activity with production schedules.
Technician Guidance and Work Leadership
Provides technical guidance to junior technicians and acts as a working lead on complex repair jobs, coordinating the work rather than managing people.
