What this role is
Serves as the organization's foremost authority on calibration science, standards, and measurement integrity across all sites and product lines. At the Staff / Distinguished Professional (P7) level, the role owns cross-organization / enterprise technical strategy, industry-level, highly ambiguous problems, and drives enterprise-wide. Sets technical direction org-wide; develops principals.
What this level does
- Define the facility- or enterprise-wide metrology roadmap, translating emerging product, regulatory, and measurement-science needs into concrete calibration capability requirements
- Solve precedent-free measurement problems and lead forensic analysis of systemic calibration failures, finding the root 'cause behind the cause' across a fleet of equipment or product genre
- Establish and advance metrology practices that influence industry standards and shift how the organization and its peers approach measurement traceability
- Advise executives, auditors, and regulators on strategic calibration and measurement-assurance priorities and provide high-level mentorship to senior metrology professionals
- Knowledge applied
- Defines metrology strategy and advances measurement-assurance practice, anticipating emerging measurement and regulatory challenges with long-term roadmaps.
- Complexity & problem solving
- Solves precedent-free measurement problems and leads forensic failure analysis to find the systemic root cause across an equipment fleet or product genre.
- Collaboration & interaction
- Networks with executives, auditors, regulators, and industry leaders; persuades stakeholders and mentors senior professionals.
- Typical experience
- 20+ years or equivalent recognition; deep contributions to metrology practice and standards.
Skills at this level
- Measurement Science / Metrology
- — Determines the standard of accuracy each instrument must meet across electrical, dimensional, optical, physical/mechanical, and chemical domains, and sets or verifies the instrument against traceable reference standards.
- Instrument Calibration
- — Calibrates EOL test fixtures, production gauges, and laboratory equipment to industry standards, verifying readings against known references and identifying out-of-tolerance conditions.
- Preventive Maintenance & Equipment Repair
- — Performs scheduled preventive maintenance and corrective actions on measuring equipment, troubleshooting failures and conducting repairs to keep instruments within calibration tolerance.
- Calibration Data Documentation & Analysis
- — Measures, compiles, analyzes, and summarizes calibration data, recording results in a calibration database and interpreting trends to detect measurement drift.
- Calibration Procedure Development
- — Writes and updates calibration testing procedures for equipment lacking established methods, defining steps, reference standards, and acceptance criteria.
- Metrology Instrument Use
- — Operates GD&T-based measurement tools, O.D./I.D. micrometers, shop gauges, and materials-testing equipment to take precise dimensional and physical measurements.
- Measurement Uncertainty Analysis
- — Establishes uncertainty budgets and traceability chains for measurement systems, predicting error contributions before instruments are relied upon in production.
- Quality Compliance & Audit Support
- — Ensures calibration practices meet quality standards, prepares records for audits, and closes procedural gaps to maintain traceability and regulatory conformance.
- Calibration Program Management
- — Owns the facility calibration program, scheduling recalls, maintaining the equipment base as audit-ready, and directing technician teams and QA activities.
- New Calibration Method Development
- — Invents new calibration methods and techniques grounded in measurement science, analyses, or calibration requirements to address measurement problems without existing precedent.
- Calibration Failure Root-Cause Analysis
- — Investigates systemic calibration failures across equipment fleets to find the underlying cause behind observed measurement errors and prevent recurrence.
- Technical Mentoring & Coordination
- — Coordinates, supervises, and trains other technicians using strong communication and organizational skills to accomplish calibration goals and transfer proven techniques.
- Cross-Department Consultation
- — Responds to client and internal queries on measurement accuracy and consults across production, quality, and engineering departments to align calibration to operational needs.
