What this role is

An experienced driver who handles complex or high-value delivery routes with minimal oversight and mentors newer drivers. At the Senior Support Specialist (S3) level, the role owns escalated / complex cases, complex or non-standard cases, and drives resolution quality on the team's hardest cases. Guides junior support informally.

What this level does

  • Independently manage non-routine shipments — expedites, multi-stop loads, hazmat or temperature-controlled moves — exercising judgment on carrier selection and routing within established rate agreements
  • Resolve delays and disruptions by rerouting, rebooking or arranging alternate carriers, deciding the recovery path with little day-to-day instruction
  • Negotiate spot rates with carriers and drivers for individual shipments within delegated authority and document the outcome
  • Verify that logistics activities comply with transportation and safety regulations, catching documentation gaps before they cause a hold or fine
  • Run standard TMS reports on service and cost for assigned lanes and coordinate the follow-up on repeated exceptions

Collaboration & interaction
Coordinates independently across carriers and internal teams; substantial understanding of how the transportation desk fits the wider chain.
Typical experience
2–4 years; skilled in transportation coordination.

Skills at this level

Transportation Management System (TMS) Operation
Books shipments, generates labels and documentation, updates in-transit status and resolves delivery exceptions within a transportation management system; at senior levels configures carrier profiles, lane and rate tables and automated status rules.
Shipment Documentation Processing
Prepares, verifies and files transportation documents — bills of lading, packing lists, delivery notes and invoices — checking weights, piece counts and accessorials so records match the order before finalization.
Carrier and Driver Communication
Communicates with carriers and drivers to confirm bookings, track loads in real time and coordinate pickup, transit and delivery, keeping customers updated on progress.
Appointment and Delivery Scheduling
Schedules pickup and delivery appointments with warehouses and consignees, working within dock-hour and appointment-window constraints to keep loads on plan.
Freight Rate Negotiation
Negotiates spot rates with carriers and drivers for individual shipments within delegated authority and documents the agreed terms.
Exception and Disruption Resolution
Detects delays and disruptions and recovers the shipment by rerouting, rebooking or arranging alternate carriers; at advanced levels owns chargeback, damage-claim and chronic-carrier disputes.
Transportation Compliance Knowledge
Ensures logistics activities and documentation meet transportation and safety regulations and legal guidelines, catching gaps before they cause a hold or penalty.
Transportation Data Analysis
Runs and interprets TMS service and cost reports to identify cost-saving opportunities such as mode shifts, consolidation or appointment-pattern changes, and recommends concrete adjustments.
Logistics/Supply Chain Domain Knowledge
Applies understanding of how transportation coordination connects upstream and downstream supply chain steps to sequence handoffs and anticipate dependencies.
Procedure Development and Peer Training
Documents and revises transportation coordination procedures, TMS entry standards and routing guides, and trains and guides coordinators on them as a working lead.
