What this role is

Executive leader accountable for the operational performance of all company stores. At the Director (Executive) (E1) level, the role owns a significant function with strategic authority, strategic and cross-functional, and drives function-wide enterprise impact. Executive leadership of a function.

What this level does

  • Lead the store operations sub-function through Directors and Store Operations Managers, owning standard operating procedures for store operations, receiving, cash handling and safety across the estate
  • Set the shrink target for the region/banner and hold the loss-prevention program (audits, training, investigation protocols) accountable to it through the operations management layer
  • Own store-compliance auditing at scale — field-visit programs, checklists and performance-data review — and drive corrective action where stores miss operational standards
  • Direct on-time implementation of planograms and store-layout principles across all locations, resolving adjacency, signage and safety conflicts that Directors escalate
  • Manage the store-operations P&L for the sub-function (payroll efficiency, shrink, operational cost) with serious consequences to functional performance if targets are missed
Knowledge applied
Applies functional store-operations strategy grounded in detailed company knowledge — SOPs for receiving, cash handling and safety, shrink control, and planogram execution across the estate.
Complexity & problem solving
Solves functional problems where standards fail at scale (missed shrink goals, layout non-compliance); consequences are serious for the operations function.
Collaboration & interaction
Interfaces with other executives and major customers/partners; leads Directors and Store Operations Managers.
Typical experience
12–15+ yrs in retail operations with both functional and management experience, having owned department/shift P&L and multi-store scope.

Skills at this level

Visual merchandising
Implements planograms and store-layout principles across the estate, checking adjacencies and signage so that floor execution drives sales and maintains safety.
Loss prevention
Sets and governs structured shrink-control programs — store audits, staff training and investigation protocols — to hold the estate to a defined shrink target.
Data analysis
Analyzes operational data such as shrink trends, process-compliance rates, payroll efficiency and store sales to identify where store operations must improve.
Store SOP development
Develops and maintains standard operating procedures for store operations, receiving, cash handling and safety, and rolls them out consistently across locations.
Store compliance auditing
Audits store adherence to operating standards through field visits, checklists and performance-data review, and drives corrective action where stores fall short.
Multi-store systems rollout
Leads the deployment of new systems and technology platforms across multiple store locations, sequencing rollout to minimize disruption to daily trading.
Operations P&L and budget ownership
Owns operational budgets and cost lines (payroll efficiency, shrink, operating cost) and aligns operational spending with company growth and profitability objectives.
Operational risk management
Manages estate-wide operational risk — in-store safety liability, shrink exposure and continuity of store operations — and aligns operational strategy to enterprise objectives.
Store operations strategy
Sets the multi-year operating model for the store estate — format strategy, labor model and store-execution standards — translating enterprise goals into how stores run.
