What this role is
Manages the operation of refinery processing units and the supervisors and staff who run them. At the Senior Manager (M3) level, the role owns multiple teams or a sub-function, multi-team execution and resourcing trade-offs, and drives sub-function outcomes. Manages managers and/or several teams.
What this level does
- Manage all shifts of a process area (multiple related units — e.g., crude/vacuum plus a downstream conversion unit), owning operating targets, unit budgets and staffing across the rotation
- Evaluate cross-shift trends in yield, reliability and off-spec events, directing operating-parameter changes and troubleshooting recurring process issues
- Lead the area's process-safety compliance during running operations, owning permit-to-work standards, LOTO governance and management-of-change execution for operating procedures
- Manage a team of shift supervisors and senior operators, setting expectations for handovers, training progression and abnormal-situation response
- Coordinate with maintenance, technical and lab functions to plan turnarounds and interventions, balancing production continuity against equipment risk
- Knowledge applied
- Applies process-area operating expertise and process-safety knowledge across multiple related units and shifts; evaluates trends to guide operating decisions.
- Complexity & problem solving
- Handles diverse operating issues across shifts — recurring reliability and yield problems, MOC on procedures — evaluating trends to set corrective direction.
- Collaboration & interaction
- Leads the area's shift-supervision team and interfaces regularly with maintenance, technical and lab functions on turnarounds and interventions.
- Typical experience
- 5–7+ years managing operating professionals, crews and area budgets.
Skills at this level

- Control Room / DCS-PLC Operation
- — Oversees console operation of plant systems through a DCS/PLC interface, coordinating with field operators to run units safely and efficiently and managing alarm response.
- Process Safety and Permit-to-Work
- — Governs LOTO (lockout/tagout), permit-to-work and management-of-change for field interventions to keep running operations compliant and safe.
- Shift Continuity and Handover
- — Owns continuity across shifts through the shift log and formal handover notes covering unit status, pending permits and critical alarms.
- Product Quality Control
- — Ensures product meets specification by directing sample collection, lab turnaround and console adjustments to hold units on-spec.
- Abnormal Situation and Incident Response
- — Directs stabilization, safe rate reduction and escalation when units alarm or upset, and reports issues, malfunctions or incidents affecting operation or safety.
- Operator Qualification and Mentoring
- — Trains and signs off operators through the field-to-console progression, running structured qualification across the unit's process operations.
- Production Reporting and Performance Tracking
- — Generates production reports and tracks performance indicators (yield, reliability, off-spec events) to guide operating decisions and improvement.
- Turnaround and Intervention Coordination
- — Plans and sequences maintenance windows, isolations, drains and returns to service with maintenance and technical functions to balance continuity against equipment risk.
- Continuous Improvement in Operations
- — Applies continuous-improvement practice to plant operations, sponsoring changes to procedures, console strategies and energy/yield performance.
- Operations Workforce Planning
- — Sets staffing models, qualification standards and succession for the shift-based operating organization across units and areas.
