What this role is

Supervises frontline plant operators and technicians during shift operations at a single power or mining plant. At the Manager (Team Lead) (M1) level, the role owns a single team, day-to-day delivery and people issues, and drives team output and health. Direct people management of one team.

What this level does

  • Supervise a shift crew of power plant operators as they monitor and inspect generating equipment and indicators through control room interfaces, SCADA systems, and field inspections to detect operating problems
  • Direct operators in starting up, shutting down, and adjusting boilers, turbines, generators, and auxiliary equipment (pumps, fans, compressors, condensers, feedwater heaters) to meet load and unit-availability requirements for the shift
  • Enforce safe and regulatory operating limits during the shift, ensuring operators log readings and follow established operating procedures and OSHA standards
  • Coordinate first-line response to equipment alarms and emergencies, directing operators to place standby emergency generators on line and calling in repair technicians as needed
  • Provide clear operating instructions and handoff communication to the crew and the incoming shift, keeping the team aligned on unit status and outstanding issues
Knowledge applied
Applies functional expertise in power plant operations to supervise a shift crew running boilers, turbines, generators, and auxiliary equipment under established operating procedures.
Complexity & problem solving
Handles limited-scope problems using established practices — responding to alarms and routine operating deviations within the shift.
Collaboration & interaction
Daily interaction with operators and peer supervisors, giving clear operating instructions and shift handoffs.
Typical experience
Functional expert (former senior operator) with some leadership exposure; often high school diploma plus operator experience, licensure for nuclear roles.

Skills at this level

Power Generation Operations Supervision
Directs shift crews and operators in monitoring, starting up, shutting down, and adjusting boilers, turbines, generators, and auxiliary equipment to meet dispatch and load requirements safely.
People Management
Manages operators, technicians, supervisors, external partners, and — at senior levels — other managers, since managing people is the heart of running a power plant across the leadership ladder.
Regulatory and Safety Compliance
Ensures plant operations stay within safe and regulatory limits, verifies work meets OSHA and industry standards, and reports and records safety violations and corrective actions.
Equipment Testing and Diagnostics Oversight
Directs the examination and testing of electrical power distribution machinery and equipment using testing devices to detect and mitigate operating problems before failure.
Emergency and Outage Response Management
Coordinates response to power outages and emergencies — placing standby emergency generators on line, monitoring their temperature, output, and lubrication, and calling in necessary personnel.
Operating Budget and Production Management
Ensures the plant meets energy production needs while staying within a set budget, balancing efficiency, reliability, and cost across the units managed.
Operations Communication and Coordination
Communicates clearly with managers, engineers, and repair technicians to coordinate tasks and give clear instructions on operating procedures, repairs, and emergency response.
Control Systems Monitoring
Uses control room interfaces, SCADA, and distributed control systems (DCS) to monitor plant indicators and generation units and detect evidence of operating problems.
Cross-Departmental Operations Strategy
Provides strategic oversight and cross-departmental coordination across operations, maintenance, engineering, and grid integration to align plant performance with business objectives.
Regulatory and Stakeholder Negotiation
Engages and negotiates with regulators, grid operators, fuel suppliers, and contractors on operating, contractual, and compliance matters affecting plant or fleet performance.
