Mechanical and Electrical Fundamentals

— Applies knowledge of mechanical systems, preventive maintenance, electricity basics such as voltage and electricity flow, and fossil-fuel theory to monitor and maintain plant equipment, requiring excellent manual dexterity.

Control-Room and SCADA Monitoring

— Operates and monitors generation equipment from a central control room using control panels, computer systems, and SCADA interfaces, tracking temperature, pressure, flow rates, and power output and responding to alarms and abnormal conditions.

Generation Unit Operation

— Starts up, shuts down, and adjusts generation units to produce specified electrical output within safe and regulatory limits while meeting dispatch and load requirements.

Auxiliary Systems Operation

— Controls and maintains auxiliary equipment — pumps, fans, compressors, condensers, feedwater heaters, filters, and chlorinators — to supply water, fuel, lubricants, air, and auxiliary power to the plant.

Power Regulation and Synchronization

— Adjusts controls to regulate the flow of power between generating stations and substations and matches generator output to the required phase, frequency, and voltage.

Electrical Equipment Testing

— Examines and tests electrical power distribution machinery and equipment using testing devices to detect faults and confirm equipment is fit for service.

Equipment Inspection and Fault Detection

— Reads charts, meters, and gauges and conducts field inspections to detect early evidence of operating problems, enabling correction before conditions escalate into forced outages or equipment damage.

Preventive Maintenance and Minor Repair

— Performs basic maintenance and minor repairs such as tightening leaking gland and pipe joints, lubricates and adjusts machinery, and identifies and reports the need for major repairs.

Operational Logging and Reporting

— Records and compiles operational readings by completing and maintaining forms, logs, and shift reports that document plant performance over time.

Dispatch and Grid Coordination

— Communicates with system operators to regulate and coordinate transmission loads, frequencies, and line voltages so plant output aligns with grid requirements.

Outage and Emergency Response

— Receives outage calls and calls in necessary personnel during power outages and emergencies, using early detection to prevent forced outages and equipment damage.

Regulatory and OSHA Compliance

— Verifies that plant operation and personnel meet OSHA and applicable regulatory requirements, and records safety violations and the corrective actions taken.

Plant Operations Budgeting

— Manages the plant budget for repairs, equipment installation, inventory, and staffing, making trade-off decisions to meet energy production needs cost-effectively.

Workforce Leadership

— Leads and develops the operating workforce — directing shift crews, developing supervisors, and planning staffing and succession — recognizing that managing people is central to running a power plant.

Multi-Site Generation Strategy

— Sets organizational goals and strategic direction across a portfolio of generation facilities, standardizing operating and safety practices and directing capital and lifecycle planning for the fleet.
