What this role is
Supervises control room operators and plant technicians during shift operations at a power or mining facility. At the Manager (Team Lead) (M1) level, the role owns a single team, day-to-day delivery and people issues, and drives team output and health. Direct people management of one team.
What this level does
- Supervise a shift crew of operators running power-generating or processing equipment — boilers, turbines, generators, reactors, water treatment and plant auxiliaries — from control boards and the plant floor
- Direct the crew through hands-on inspection, preventative maintenance and startup/shutdown of generators, pumps and turbines during the shift
- Enforce that operators take regulatory/corrective action based on readings from charts, meters and gauges at established intervals
- Respond first to abnormal plant conditions, equipment failures and operational issues on shift, escalating when beyond established practice
- Maintain accurate daily records of equipment operation and readings to ensure optimal production levels for the unit
- Knowledge applied
- Functional expert in operating power-generating or processing equipment; applies established operating practices and safety procedures to run a shift, with some leadership exposure.
- Complexity & problem solving
- Limited scope; resolves routine operating deviations using established procedures and gauge/meter readings, escalating anything beyond known practice.
- Collaboration & interaction
- Daily interaction with the shift crew and peer supervisors during handovers.
- Typical experience
- Qualified operator with operator/maintenance certifications and some leadership exposure.
Skills at this level

- — Oversees monitoring of plant equipment from the DCS and on the plant floor, ensuring operators take corrective action on readings and maintain environmental and safety compliance.
- Abnormal-condition and emergency response
- — Leads rapid response to abnormal plant conditions, equipment failures and operational issues, restoring safe operation and escalating per procedure.
- Environmental and safety regulatory compliance
- — Ensures plant operations comply with EPA, OSHA, DOT and environmental standards, enforcing regulatory/corrective action at established monitoring intervals.
- Operations policy and training development
- — Develops, defines and trains overall operations policies and procedures, and drives operators to achieve required operator and maintenance qualifications per training standards.
- Mechanical, electrical and instrumentation/controls competence
- — Applies related mechanical, electrical or instrument-and-controls experience within industrial process, electric utility, mining or heavy-construction settings to run and troubleshoot plant equipment.
- Preventative maintenance coordination
- — Coordinates hands-on inspection, preventative maintenance and repair of turbines, generators, water treatment and auxiliary equipment to keep assets available.
- Production records and output optimization
- — Keeps accurate daily records of plant processing equipment and uses them to sustain optimal production levels and cost-effective output.
- Coaching/mentoring
- — Identifies developmental needs and mentors operators advancing toward supervisory and specialist roles.
- Cross-functional operations coordination
- — Coordinates energy production and distribution operations across engineering, maintenance and safety departments to optimize processes and meet production goals.
- Industrial communication protocols
- — Applies knowledge of industrial protocols such as Modbus, DNP3, Ethernet, ControlNet, DeviceNet and OPC to oversee DCS/SCADA-connected plant equipment.
